Hi all, have cross posted this as I believe it to be a scam for thieves to steal puppies! I will be contacting Harrods tomorrow to see if this livestock manager exists & will keep you all updated...cheryl.

Dear Mrs XXXX,

My name is Katy Fahy and my role is the Livestock Buyer for Harrods Ltd, basically I buy all livestock for  the Pet Shop based at our Knightsbridge store.

The reason for my approach is that I am currently looking to expand my puppy vendor base, basically bringing in a variety of different breeds for the store.

At present in our pet shop we sell puppies, kittens, rabbits, guinea pigs, rodents and fish.  All of our animals have the highest quality of care, our livestock handlers are highly qualified and have a wide knowledge of different species and breeds, and we pride ourselves on that.  Our animals have large cages, lots of exercise, grooming, handling and more importantly TLC.  We do not open our pet shop all day, giving our animals "Rest Time " so as not to stress them.

After we have sought our  litter of puppies/kittens from a potential vendor (breeder), we make arrangements to go out and meet them and do a site report, we then carry this out anually.

This is basically visiting where the animals are housed whether it be in kennels, cattery or a house - we like to make sure everything is adequate for a breeding establishment.  We take note of what the animals are fed, their feeding regime, what type of bedding they sleep on and what type of litter they use.  We also like to take photographs of the area in which the animals are housed as well as photographs of the litters parents.

At the time of the visit it is important that we see all necessary paper work related to the animals such as breeders licence (if relevant), pedigree papers and vaccination, worming and flea records of the parents.

Once we have negotiated a settlement figure and a delivery date it is then the vendor's responsibility to deliver the animals to Harrods' company veterinary surgeon which is Chris Hall (based in London).  On arrival at the veterinary surgery either myself or a member of the livestock team will be there to meet you ready for the animals health check - however if the animals do not pass their health checks then Harrods will not accept the animal.  Once the animals have passed their health examination they will be taken to the pet shop at the store

Some vendors choose to bring the animals into the pet shop themselves and settle them in, in this case we would organise parking and a security pass for yourselves in advance.

The pet shop will be closed when the new litter arrives and will remain closed untill the animals are fully settled. In some case we would even close the pet shop for the rest of the day, leaving the animals to settle over night.  The animals will then remain in the pet shop for a one week quarrantine period before being sold.

We have a very long waiting list for various breeds therefore our animals never stay longer then two weeks here with us.  On homing of our animals, we interview each and every customer and would even go as far as carrying out home checks.  Some vendors do request that we give their details to the new owners of the puppies/kittens, so they can stay in touch or if they have any queries or need advise on the breed, again this is optional to you.

I hope that this has given you a more indepth insight as to how we operate things here, I would also highly recommend that you come in and visit us at the store as I would be more than happy to show you around the Livestock area and talk through in detail our process.

I look forward to hearing from you.

Kind regards

Katy Fahy

Can you imagine letting puppies go to home that you have not been able to vet yourself or have any lasting contact with - it doesn't bear thinking about

Is selling pups/ kittens in (pet ) shops/ stores common place in England now? Having lived in Northern Ireland for over 11 years now I was SHOCKED  when returning to Hertfordshire just before Xmas I discovered a local Jolleys pet store selling all manner of cats and dogs at EXTORTIONATE prices  . Both pedigree and non pedigree dogs & cats were on sale. A tabby kitten was £199, a ginger one £225 (w00t) they were'nt even pedigree kittens!!!...isn't this a ludicrous price?? A chihuahua crossed with a jack russell was £799, pomeranian pups were £1200 :- " and a pitiful looking black & tan CKCS pup was £800 ......PEDIGREE ONLY!!....No papers, just a pedigree...that anyone could probably have written/made up!!!!! These were only a few of the animals on sale there   How common has this become can anyone tell me??!! :b

no i do not support PETA as i think they are as cruel as they think certain practices are but im not adverse to using these sort of people to aid an issue if i felt it was in animals best interest, i am a supporter too of using animals in medicine testing ( off to get tin hat ready for fall out!) as without it my son would never be alive today
No arguments from me about trsting drugs on animals (make up ect maybe not) as you read a few weeks ago I had a descussion with a gentleman in our local town center about that very matter.

he admited to having taken prescription drugs but was stood there asking people to sign a petition to stop all animal trsting? I might of mention he was a hypocrit or words to that effect.

To me PETA should be avoided at all cost as even involving them in a case like this is just fueling their amunition against pets being sold/kept ect.

This is simply dreadful - so difficult to get you head round - I've never had any dealings with PETA but they claim to be helping animals not destroying... :(
