just came across an article on a bull terrier site. as you know, pit bulls are banned. on top of that, there are many laws prohibiting the ownership of dangerous animals, with much breed specific legislation being bantered about.

sick minded people have now come up with a way round this :(

they've been importing american bulldogs and crossing them with staffords, thereby circumventing current laws. it goes on to say that, while both breeds for the most part are trustworthy, the resulting crosses are highly unstable. just as the pit bull/irish staffords bred in the 80's and 90's, behaviour is volatile and extremely unpredictable. from the stafford, the pups get the speed, agility, dog hating and independence. from the bull dog determination, relentlessness and a bigger, wider mouth.

i know k9'ers are very sensible people, i just wanted you all to be aware, especially in areas where dog fighting is rife, and safeguard your pets.

the determination of the scum out there to exploit animals is heart breaking.

this cross has been about round here for some time now basicaly since the legilstion was done and were now have theres dogs quiet a few genrations down but the tempramnt is just the same if not more volatile than there first cross perants ands grand perants. The main problem inst the dogs its the morons that own them.

We never let our dog off lead roind here we allways take them safe places in the van cos we are surrounded buy them

too many idiots out there

just concerns me when the rspca, police AND the home office are warning people.

breeders/importers of american bull dogs have been told to make severe checks before and after the sale of pups. likewise stafford owners, on top of the usual safeguarding against theft.

Dunno-I think even the crosses come under the DDA, and thereby can be taken from their owners and destroyed-as far as i am aware anyway.

nope, thats why theyre being bred. the met police are petitioning to get laws drafted now, before panic sets in and numerous breeds get blacklisted.

Oh right...when the DDA came out and there was a big hoo ha about these dogs my neighbours had their two dogs seized, an unregistered staffie and her pup (result of mating to Am.Pit), lengthy and costly court battle ensued (during which time they were not allowed to see or know the whereabouts of either dog), anyway in the end they lost the battle and both dogs were destroyed, as apparently two experts were flown in from America and their word that both were sufficently 'of the type' to constitue coming under the new act was taken-perhaps it had become more specific without me being aware of it-this was about 13 years ago I think this happened.

I'm not fan of the bull breeds I must confess, but I did feel heart sorry for my neighbours, these were family pets, and sensibly reared, it was just part of a big swoop in the area at the time. I even gave them a statement to use in court, and photos of those two dogs playing happily with my hounds...as they often did without incident.

its such a shame, these types of dogs often make really bad crosses, totally ruins a good breed - disgusting way to treat them

i remember the act being brought in ive laso got an article in the dog annual from that year giving details of the legislation.if in the OPINION of the police officer involved the dog is of the pit bull TYPE he can confiscate the dog and take it into detention.the guy writing the article specified the words in the opinion of the officer involved.he said if the officer thought a yorkie resembled a pit bull then he could take it into custody.the dangerous dogs act also specifies any dog that is out of contol in a public place and gives a member of the public the thought that the dog might bite or scares a member of the public into thinking the dog MIGHT bite.the dog doesnt HAVE to bite just give a member of the public the threat that it might bite.it then tears into the act in detail saying how it was rushed into parliament by the scare tactics involved by the media.there was a big article on the poor dog called otis who was taken into custody cos his owner took his muzzle off while he was in his car in order to give him a drink.the police officer took the dog into custody as a car is designated a public place! there was miles of paper written in the press about otis and his case and they brought witnesses into court to say the dog had never shown any aggressive tendencies and if i remember rightly dr.malcolm willis the behaviourist was brought forward as a professional witness to say the dogg had been tested by him and showed no aggressive tendencies towards other dogs.
