Billy Mackenzie

Yes , I knew Billy well and have a bitch out of the last litter that he and Linda bred. She is a daughter of Linda's W.C.R.Ch./Fed Ch Magic Trick.Although she raced occasionally, she was more at home on the coursing field and is still at 12+ an ace ratter. She is the mother of W.C.R.Ch, Sp Ch/ Graceful Chimes. Chimes @ Midnight, Gambler Girl,Second Strike and Lamplyte Dancing Princess, and the granny of our latest litter, Constant Chimes, Gambler Boy, Faithful Venture and Texacana Venture. Billy was a lovely man. He died in such tragic circumstances and is sadly missed.

Do you mean Billy Mackenzie from the Associates?

Yes .....I have two from this line ....Second Strike and Strike The Pose .....they are both very sound in whatever you ask of them be it race, show or catch rabbits etc ......

Yes definetly Billy from the associates

Brilliant band, really nice fella. Tragic

I bought my first Whippet off him and Linda Wren in Hyde when I was about 12

Is there really some still around off that line Strike.

I know there was a champion related to my dog named STRIKER?

Am i right?

Will there be any future pups of the line ?

Party Fears Two

What a song

I knew Billy really well looked after one of his dogs for him Party Girl and then was given Gracious ( McArthur Spectre)by him (Striker x Mastermind) or Tell um Straigh X McArthur Spectre. If you want that breeding look no further tha this years pedi top ten as most have Gracious in their pedigree including this years winner Summa Breeze through her sire The Real McCoy. Billy was a great chap never knew anyone who didn't like him loved having him to stay he would talk long into the night about gigs he had done money had wasted and his beloved whippets and of course Scotland. Every Sunday no matter where he was in the world he rang either Linda or me to find out how the dogs had done. Billy and Linda were a great partnership on the breeding scene really going into the finer points of confirmation but unfortunately events got to much for him and he decided that Whippet breeding was no longer for him and sadly he killed himself he was only 40. His voice was amazing he could sit there and captivate you singing one of his own tunes or one of Franks Sinatra,s. Julia Clokes bred a great litter a few years back from Magic Trick bred by Billy and Linda she was put to The Real McCoy ( Gracious x Powerful Paddy) and one of the bitches Graceful Chimes was top drawer. Spoke to Linda last week got to talking about old times and how much we miss Billy such a charmer.

How great to see the lines still so strong and winning. The dog we bought off billy and linda was called macarthur moody blue (Moz) and somehow he was massive about 25inch i think? He lived until he was fourteen but never raced just had a little trial where Billy had brought another pup for me but my dad wouldnt let me have it. Gutted. That was in wigan. Generous of Billy I was only a keen little kid and he was going to give me a cracking little pup. He knew the whippet bug had got me I think. I still have his signed record. And lets not forget even Morrissey wrote that Smiths song about him and Bono nicked his style.

I will upload the photos I have from back in the day.

Thanks for the posts. I only met him a few times as a youngster and We have been watching a lot of stuff on youtube and the website. Very inspiring man. I really bet his friends do miss his cheeky charm. Some great vids on you tube of Billy.

I believe Linda is now breeding German Shepherds and not whippets?

I remember reading an interview with Billy Mackenzie once, where he said that for all the supposed glamour of his rock 'n' roll lifestyle, he met far more interesting people on the whippet racing scene than in music circles.

I got the impression the music press thought the whippets were his way of playing a little joke on them, and had no idea just how important his dogs were to him.

I can remember you going to the Northern with your blue whippet lovely dog just a bit big and well fed. Billy and Linda were well known for the breeding of blues and blue brindles it went right through their lines I have one now a pup called Prudence who is a blue brindle. Linda just has the one dog now a Shepherd she has not been that well lately, so has not been able to do much. There was a programme on the TV recently called spound of Scotland which shoes a lot of Billy singing and featured him with his whippets have tried to get hold of it for Linda but no joy its not featured on his web site either. Glad to know you are all doing ok.

Wow

You have a good memory. Why do you think our Moz was so tall! I believe the whippet news were going to hold an inquiry or something silly like that. i suppose all lines throw the odd big one. He certainly was no racing whippet but he had a good life, his brothers and sisters were half his size?

I heard Linda hadnt been so well. Very nice woman to us.

Just watching Billy on the Youtube led me to ask if anyone knew him. im really glad I did.

Where do you race at now is it near chorley or in manchester somewhere?

Is it a vibrant racing scene?

We went non pedi racing in Lancaster but there is nobody turning up. It is a shame.

But the pedis and the non pedis dont sit that well together in terms of racing do they? Totally different types of whippets

I remember that program, so I've had a search on you tube and I'm hoping this might be link you've been searching for to show to Linda, it's a great clip

Do you have any idea who the dogs are in the photos? I've been trying to find out a bit more about a bitch called McArthur Snowdrop and when I saw the white bitch in those photos I wondered if that might be her.

My wee racing bitch Ruby has the McArthur line on both sides in her pedigree and Gracious is her great, great grandma. As a coincidence I'm taking Ruby to the holiday inn next month so I may need to order her scrambled eggs and smoked salmon as a tribute to Billy and his love of whippets.

yes, I remember Billy well, he used to come to our club to run his dogs quite often, in his white Rolls driven by Billy Jacobson, and I remember him showing too, thelast one I remember was Macarthur Snowdrop, she was very pretty. It was very sad the way he went. A few years ago there was a show put on in Edinburgh in his memory and my whippets posed for photos which were made into posters for the show
