I have a 2.5 yr old whippet bitch. Spayed at 1 yr. Weighs approx 14.5 kilos. Fit & healthy. Suddenly developed incontinence overnight even though goes out for wee last thing. Suspected urinary tract infection so treated with antibiotics but incontience remains. Vet perscribed Stiboestrol 1mg, 2 tabs twice per week. This works providing I don't forget to administer by even a few hours or she'll leak again. Not al little but the entire contents of her bladder. I've been told that if she stays on this drug long term it will eventually have an adverse affect on her bone marrow. Does anyone know of a herbal remedy, or similar, with no side effects I can use bearing in mind she will probably be on some kind of remedy for the rest of her life.

She's fed twice daily with main meal approx. 5pm.

Any help or suggestions gratefully received. Thanks.

Hi Gail; i would imagine the problem is caused by weakening of her pelvic floor muscles. This also happens to woman after or aproaching menopause and is due to reduction of hormones produced by the ovaries. That is why sometimes bitches develop this problem after spaying.

If she was a human , pelvic floor exercise would be my advice. However, some menopausal women swear by the tofu = soya products containig high levels phytoestrogens.

Maybe you can try some on her :luck:

:( I had to have my little bitch spayed before she was 2 years old and have used the same theory as the last thread. Every other day I give her a spoonful of my soya phyto estrogens - but I have to admit this was not to stop/prevent incontinence but to try to keep it at bay as I know that incontinence is a side effect of spaying a bitch - not that the vet tells you that at the time do they??!

If you don't like what the vet is doing, you could always consider seeking veterinary advice from another vet. :- "

There are vets who deal in herbal remedies only, and we had one give us a talk at the Whippet Club one year - can't remember his name, but someone will! I bet they will even have his contact details.

Hi Veronna, thanks for your reply. I had to have my bitch spayed because she had a pyometre after her very first season. I'm not unhappy with my vet, they are a great bunch there, been going to them for many years. I've never heard of soya phyto estrogens, what are they? Not all bitches have a problem, in fact most don't. I've just been unlucky I guess, what with this & the pyometre.

If anyone has the email contact details of the herbal remedy vet, I'd be grateful.

All the best. Gail.

phyto estrogens are natural hormons found in soya products = tofu, soya milk. Capsules are also available from chemist or supermarket. Maybe se if you can mix bit of soya milk (or tofu) into her food, it's so tasteless there should not be any problem of her not liking it.

My old spayed girl with the dodgy chest started bedwetting (can't say leaking cos she does lakes!!). She has to have ABs on a regular basis so she just had an extra blast of those first to ensure she had no UTI but then my Vet prescribed Propalin. Problem dried up (excuse the pun!) within a couple of days. After about 3 weeks of no accidents I ceased the Propalin to see what would happen and within 3 days she was back bedwetting so I now know the stuff works and she has the minimum dose I can get her on permanently.

I get it on prescription because my Vet cannot buy it for the price I get it from Vetmedic!!
