Yet another good idea proposed by the Kennel Club I see.

Thanks for your reply Bri, to be honest I wasn't specifically aiming at you to answer, just wondered if this is a rumour others had heard or even if there was some validity to it. Obviously someone out there's recommending it as you've come across such info, I just wonder why - something which I don't expect you to know the answer to. The only other reason I can think of is I've heard some say that it can 'fill out' particularly slender bitches with a showing career. Personally I think that's an old wives tale too as I've seen veteran bitches whelp litters and return to the same physical condition and weight as they were before and you'd think if anything an older bitch would have a harder time of it!

I'm glad to see you have 5 homes waiting, likes been said it may be better to wait but this is only my personal opinion. I don't class whippets as being mentally or physically mature until at least 2 years old and I like them to experience youth for as long as possible, that goes for both dogs and bitches.

I would just like to add (as you have already been given lots of advice) that sometimes the dog knows when the best time to mate the bitch is and not all bitches go "by the book" as mentioned above (in fact I don't think they have read the same books at all!! ) many bitches can ovulate late and differently on each season too,in the last seasons of our bitches we had one ovulate on days 22-24 though was in fact still standing on day 30! And in her previous season she was ovulating on days 13-15,prior to that it was days 19-21,another bitch (her daughter) ovulated on days 17-19 and our other bitch was standing from days 10-14 and ovulating on days 13-15 (but our male was'nt interested in her really until the latter of those days) Also I know two other people whose bitches have ovulated later both well after day 15 and her dog was'nt interested in the bitches at all until around days 17/18 even though they were standing from day 11.

Another thought for you is that sometimes if the dog is immature he may not be interested until he is older and ready mentally...our older dog was not sexually interested in the bitches until he was well over 18mths whereas his half brother has been "aware" of them from around 6 or 7 months...all dogs are different, play it by ear. :D
