We are desperate now. My daughter has a 15 month old Malamute X NI bitch that has had two very long seasons, one at 5 months lasting 5 weeks and one at 7 months lasting 8 weeks, culminating in open pyo and being spayed. She has also been diagnosed at a specialist vets in Herts to have Inflammatory Bowel Disease this was done by biopsies of the gut and the start of Hip Dysplasia, although have been told if we can build up the muscle around the ball and socket which are both fully formed it should poss be OK. We have done physio, hydro with her to help this.

Ever since being spayed she has been at her vulva and we have been told amongst other things that it is habit and I dont believe this for one minute. She was in vets last Thurs for blood tests as we thought she was VitB12 deficient and she has been having injections for this, but wanted to check her levels now. Whilst in we asked for them to take a swab of her vulva which showed up an infection, which kind/sort has yet to be decided, but yesterday i.e. Sat she started spotting blood...not a lot, but blood non the less. We contacted the vet and have an appt for Mond a.m. She seems no worse in herself, but has never been quite right from us having her at 8 weeks old tbh. She is losing weight and now only weighs 35kg. She will not eat the special RC duck/tapioca kibble or the James Wellbelloved kibble recommended by the vets, but if we give her other food she gets the constant squits and is sometimes sick too, so both ways she is not getting the nourishment she so needs as is still growing.

Has anyone ever had this prob, particularly with the blood spotting so long after spaying, or have any ideas on why/how this has happened?

We are soooo worried and have to now be thinking of her quality of life tbh. She is THE most affectionate, even tempered dog you could wish to meet even going through all this with only the occassional mardy mood which is obviously understandable to us, anyway. HELP, please.

I am so sorry to hear that your daughter has had such a worrying time with her lovely bitch.

Depending on where you live, I would be asking for a referral to a vet school or a specialist to get to the root of all these problems, With all due respect to vets, it does perhaps sound out of the scope of everyday practice.

I think it's definitely worth a second opinion, and a look at from another vet practice that someone in your area could recommend. It is possible that all this time she's had a really bad/deep Urinary tract infection. This can produce spotting, and certainly would induce a LOT of attention to that area. (as well as frequent attempts to pee).

I think it definitely needs to be investigated further.

Thanks for your replies, guys and sorry I have not been back before now.

We have been to a specialist vet down in Herts where her IBD and hip problem was diagnosed. Other than that we are now on our third vet in our own area, all of which have been recommended.

Latest events have been that her hormone level is very high which the vet is very concerned about, there could be pyo of the stump at the cervic or it could be just down to infection.

She is on a 10 day course of antibiotics and we are going to wait to see if she comes into 'season' in a few months time, as the bleeding has now stopped - was just 7 days.. If she does then she will definitely be back on the table, although it will be more difficult to find ovary tissue rather than complete ovary! She has gained 2kg in wieght, we are feeding her very little, very often, but this a.m. has been sick and had the squits!!

Just really wondered if there was anyone out there that had a dog with 'any' of the probs she has so we can compare notes.

Present vet seems to think that this infection has been clouding the other probs, so will see if the antibiotics work. She seems pretty much happy and my daughter did ask at the last vet visit if he thought we should carry on and he said yes. Now I know vets think money perhaps, but this is a vet that does not believe in operating unless it is totally necessary and got to say we both feel quite happy with him. He takes notice of what we say, listens and then tests accordingly.

Thanks for your help. X
