Now that I finally have my black & white, I'd like to know if anyone's got any special tips for keeping the coat beautiful.

I am a bit worried that the harsh tropical Queensland sun might fade or bleach my boy's black. Although other black/black&white breeds here don't seem to have much trouble, so maybe I'm just a teeny bit paranoid.

Any external or internal (feeding) tips will be read with great interest.

Give him a rub with a piece of silk!

Doesn't kelp help with black pigment? Stop worrying, just feed him well, if he is healthy it will show in his coat. Enjoy him. How about some more pics?

Linda

We used to use kelp in Dalmatians to help improve pigment - eg pups who had shadowy spots. I don't need to improve pigment (he's got plenty :D ) but I just want to keep the shine and density of the black.

He will go in the shady kennel whilst I am at work and therefore won't be out in full strength sun during the hottest part of the day which I guess is the most important thing. I just don't want that rusty look you see on some black dogs in other breeds.

I'm just interested to read what other people do with their blacks.

I always gave "Velcote" to my blacks. I doesn't improve the pigmentation but it helps to keep the coat in a shiny condition

Evening primrose oil is excellent for coats, just a few drops a day on his food should do the trick

And yes,how about LOTS more pics of the handsome Cash?

Our balck whip Inky has just turned one and hes starting to show a bit of the rust colour. His dad was black and mum was blue so I think it must be the mix coming out. I would be careful with him when its hot as Inky overheats very quickly but he's a very small whip.

I find almonds help keep the coat shiny he has about 3 or four a day.

When i lived in NSW my black horse and black danes used to get "burned" in summer. Their coat would get brown tinge. In the end i did not allow them out in the sun between about 11am and 4pm. It is a good idea anyway, hopefully reduces possibility of skin cancer.

:luck: Lida

I had a black persain cat ( called Leroy  )who used to go brown in the summer . Id say keep him out of the sun Lana , and do what the others say :- "

Also we need pics , how about putting some of the baby ones on that you sent me ,, Then we can see how he s progressed  :D

more,more photos please :D :D

I have never done anything 'special' with my blacks except that they always seem to come up with more scurf, no matter how careful you are on selecting a shampoo, when they are bathed. So I never bath the day before a show but usually between 7 - 3 days before one (and then hope he doesn't roll in fox sh*t between then and the show!!! LOL!)

I've never thought about caring for a black/white dogs coat any different.

My JRT has a lovely coat which i think has something to do with sleeping on shredded paper :teehee:

Thanks for the tips everyone!

I haven't taken any more pics of Cash - OH isn't home to help me. I will put a baby pic or two on the other thread - but will have to resize them first.

I brush Sid for ten minutes every morning - which he loves, and then "buff" his coat with a shammy leather. I also add sunflower oil to his feed. Everybody comments on his lovely glossy coat.

Tamara, what is Velcote? A product made by whom and where? Thanks.

Avon - I was thinking about adding oil of some sort to his diet. We used to do that with our Dallies and I have been asked by the breeder to do it with OH's red sibe.

A spray-on sunblock might be a good idea for tropical Queensland. I'm sure there must be some especially made for dogs but otherwise there are plenty made for human hair.

You must have read my mind! Also, I would think black whippets are less likely to get that brown tinge than longer-coated breeds, simply because they shed their hairs before they are bleached by the sun. This obviously might not hold true for all parts of Australia, though...

Don't know much about the care of a black coat Lana, but I add Flax Seed Oil to Max and Beau's food. Great for their coats.

Also have a tube of Demcare Aloveen Oatmeal Intensive Conditioner. Should be easy to find at vets or larger shows. Great stuff to add a little lustre.

HI I HAVE A BLACK WHIPPET AND I JUST USE A PIECE OF VELVET. USE THE SMOOTH SIDE, AND WHATCH HIS COAT SHINE!.

I HAVE BEEN DOING IT SINCE HE WAS A PUP NOW 3 YEARS OLD AND HIS COAT IS LIKE A MIRROR.

IT HAS TO BE PROPER VELVET, NO IMMITATIONS

IT DOES WORK.!

Oh Lana - hope he stays black & white  .... Yes indeed where are those pictures pleeeasssssey
