The lady that walks my dogs told me today, that two dogs belonging to one of her clients are seriously ill at the vets, having come into contact with Blue Green Algae. We have quite a few reservoirs in our area, and with all the hot weather recently, this has made an appearance.

It usually appears during hot weather spells each year. Do keep an eye out for it. It usually grows on the surface of lakes and reservoirs where the water is quite still. It is usually visible by its greenish, blue colouration, as the name suggests.

Dogs can die from ingesting this. :nuke:

The Nature reserve near me has it almost every year Nicola. The local council has signs up explaining that you must not swim or allow your dogs to swim in the lakes.

I like to take my dogs to the River during the hot weather as it's crystal clear and has shallow parts.

very interesting thank you

I will keep an eye out for it and keep well away

Gosh Nicola - very frightening (w00t) hope thats not the stuff I took Kobis picture in last year.

It tends to appear during really hot spells each year. The waterboard do put up notices warning people, but none have gone up around our local reservoirs yet. It appears as a really greeny, bluey light film on the water, rather than anything gungy and plant based (if I remember rightly).

I'd do as Mally recommends and stick to rivers where the water is clear and moving.
