Good day to all you lovely k9 peeps, hope you are all well as i am, my question is, ive had a reminder from my vet telling me jills booster is due, should i or shouldnt i have it done, thanking you ever so much.

keith

o Keith - have it done! i know others here might not agree (actually, have no idea if there's an equivalent to the anti-MMR lobby in the doggy world!) - but you've only just nursed the poor girl through a nasty bout of illness - her reserves will be depleted....just imagine how awful you'd feel if she suffered or even worse, from something entirely preventable!

i always vaccinte my crew - can't take any more heartbreak!

If she is back to full health and you would be happier with her boostered then do it.

If she hasn't then I'd wait until she is and then do it. IMO it's too great a risk adding more challenges to an immune system already working hard.

Once vaccinated your dog should have immunological memory for life and be able to produce an antibody response if needed .........but if its piece of mind you require there are to options 1. a blood test for titre levels or 2. boost

i dont know the cost of blood test but its bound to be more than having the booster

My kind vet offered me both?, i asked if they would refund the vaccine price if kass had not seroconverted and you can imagine the response

well that makes for very disturbing reading!! i have always had our dogs vaccinated cos once you have seen one die of pavo-virus ( my parents missed his booster when i was a kid )its not somthing you would want to relive. i think the risks of not vaccinating can be alot worse than the side affects.

thats said my sisters yorkie (long since passed) had his jabs every year untill he was 10ish when he collapsed after his booster and very nearly died, she never let him have it again. i will leave u to make up ur own minds.

just read the article on feeding bones " dont feed beef bones because cows kept in pastures near highways have lead in their bones?" when did a old diary cow last find its way into a butchers shop and it would have had to been standing by that road a long time

1) first in reply you your question Keith, you have to do what you feel is best, i.e if you feel Jill is up to it get her done if not leave her a bit or ask the vet for advice...

If you dont like yours vets advice change...after my vets rip off price for a cat tooth i have moved elseware

2) if you race we have no choice but to vacinate or at least when you get your passport you have to prove the dog has had vacinations...do you have to continue with boosters??

Absolutely, definitely, no question. Get it done. There is a risk with anything but I would not forgive myself if anything happened to my boys because they had not had their boosters.

Hi Whippetsrus

How about some pictures of your boys :D

Dawn

I booster mine every 2-3 years only. I am concious that whippets are prone to AI disorders and know that there is a body of thought that over immunisation could be a factor. That just feels right for me, but it really is a very personal decision, and one only you can make. If I didn't take my boys racing, I wouldn't bother at all after their initial vaccination as I believe they develop field immunity from just visiting the same places. As we are out and about and in contact with loads of dogs, I feel happier taking some precautions for them.

Good luck with your decision, I'm sure you'll make the right one for you and Jill.

Is a booster effective if only given every 2 or 3 years.

I dare not miss a year now as Alfie didn't get his booster last year and this year he had to have the whole course again as he missed last years jab, which cost me double too.

Any one going on holiday and having to put their dogs in kennels will need to be up to date with all their jabs, some kennels also ask you to have the kennel cough vaccine too.

I will get boosters done each year for peace of mind, (apart from the fact that boarding kennels won't take them unless they are up to date with their boosters)I'd never forgive myself if they became ill : but don't know the probability of them going down with any of the diseases if they were not given boosters after the initial puppy course. I wonder what the statistics are on this one.

Check exactly what your vet is giving each year, too, Keith because that may affect your decision.

My vet doesn't give everything annually any more. She gives boosters of different things so that although the dogs get a jab every year, the actual booster they recieve may be for different things. She says many drug companies are now advising this, because giving everything annually isn't thought to be the right approach these days.

I haven't given boosters for 30 + years & have NEVER had a problem,& this was on my Vet's advice all them years ago!!!

His comment to me was that if your puppy is vaccinated,& is well socialised & out & about in the first year of it's life,it will have built up it's own immunity well enough to support it throughout it's life.but if you want to line my pockets with Gold, that's up to you! (w00t)

I have periodically had blood tests done,& every time, the titre readings have been high!

My vet charges £20 for a blood test, which is probably cheaper than a booster

Alway's remember that if you do decide to have a booster done, make sure that your dog is 150% healthy first.

Interesting ;) Thanks for that tip. I'm going to ask...

In USA and Canada it is now officialy recomended that after the initial vaccination course dogs are given boosters only if the titre count is on low side. As far as the dog's passport goes; it should be perfectly OK for the vet to put his stamp in if the titre is good. :luck:

I only ever have the puppy jabs done, then thats it :b ........My dogs go to lots of different places around the country so will build up their own immune systems in a wider field ..........My vet says that after the puppy jabs, the dogs body will build up its immunity so boosters are pointless because the immunity should already be there :)

2) if you race we have no choice but to vacinate or at least when you get your passport you have to prove the dog has had vacinations...do you have to continue with boosters??

You have to show the dogs vaccination card for your passport .......The WCRA brought in a new rule last year that the dogs have to have had their 1st jabs, but after this its up to the owner as to wether they booster every year or not .........Makes RM jobs much easier now as every year when we sold the passport stickers we were supposed to see the up to date vac's card ........I never was a very good RM lol o:)

i personally get them done every year, just because so many people around here dont know what jabs ARE. thinking about it, most never bother with the vets at all, and its quite heart breaking to see at times :(
