Does anyone own a Borzoi lurcher/longdog. In the future i would like to cross my lurcher bitch (3/4 greyhound 1/4 bord.collie) with my borzoi dog. But before i do so i want to know if anyone owns one or has a photo of one.

I would also like to know if borzoi crosses are popular, if not then i will not bother crossing my dogs. I have heard that they are sought after in wales, but i am very unsure for wales because of all the puppy farming.

Does anyone know what borzoi crosses are like for working? They must be great for foxes and deer? My borzoi is incredibly keen but i've never worked him, hes purely a showdog.

If anyone has any information i would be very grateful. And pictures!!!! :D

hi, the only info I have is that the rescue kennels I work in were recently contacted about a borzoi x border collie by some very desperate ladies

they found it on the internet and thought it an unusal cross, so visited the breeder in wales, paid for it and brought it home, aged about 10 weeks

its now about 17 weeks, getting tall and becoming too hard to control, its a natural hunter and it is trying to kill their other pets (they've had vet bills already) :- "

apparently its a lovely dog though! (w00t)

I'm sure it would be a better dog in a more suitable environment, but then you could say that about most of the lurchers seen in rescue :(

not much info I'm afraid

good luck :luck:

p.s. I should add that I think show borzoi are amazing to look at, I love seeing them at crufts

Seen one first cross borzoi x greyhound, a bitch called Carly, this bitch was a demon on fox and deer, and fast enough for hare. Her temprement with other dogs was always in question, every lurcher where I lived had stitches attributed to this lurcher, but was ok with children. Not going to say all these croses will be like that, havent seen any others to make comparisons with. But overall, a very useful alround cross for work, or the formation of a breeding plan.

Hi i there is a thread which i put in the lurcher forum called (triple win for N.I k9ers) if you wana check that out as there is a pic of a friends Borzoi/Greyhound on it! he is also a member of k9 and as soon as he see's this thread he will prob tell you all about them!

as far as i know thay are great working dogs and also do really well in showing and racing!

well this is a pic of one of his Borzoi/greyhounds 'Storm'

hi there

yup i got a borzoi cross.."storm" hes 27" and smooth as you can see. hes great on hares and no doubt he could take down any legal quarry. for looks and physique the dog is stunning . he was "all ireland lurcher champion" 2003 "all ireland racing champion" 2004 and also in 2003 he was "reserve supreme british lurcher champion" at peterborough. :- " in the field he is really keen and astute with the lamp. his litter brothers and sisters were all very alike, favouring the coursing greyhound side of the family. i would love to put him back over a borzoi bitch or a saluki bitch, ive a feeling this time the trend would swing towards the bitches side. as mismadam has told you i covered a track bitch out of "droopys kewel" with him which has resulted in a rocket ship pup!! (w00t)

I've seen a few borzoi-greyhound crosses at lurcher shows

They were all very large and smooth coated

Thanks for your reply's everyone. Those two smooth dogs are stunning. .

Those links were great. Alot of Borzoi's aren't very good around other dogs coz they don't get enough socialisation when young.

My boy is lovely. He has chased a deer before but i didn't want him to get it, i wouldn't know what to do with when dead. He has formidable speed and hes beautiful.

But if say i had a litter of 10 pups would i sell them all? Are they popular? They would have to go to responsible homes though. Borzoi can be difficult.

By the way Doris that Borzoi/Collie cross from wales was probably from a puppy farm. Many puppy farmers cross two dogs if they think the general public will think it's unusual. Most puppy farm puppys end up with behavouiral and mental problems. :(

I know, that's what makes it so horrible, cos its just done for money

I'm not suggesting you'd do anything like that, you've already got a borzoi so know better than anyone what special homes they need. That's why its so difficult if a dog of this type ends up in rescue - the general public aren't always offering 'special' homes, sometimes its hard enough to home the easiest of dogs

Anyway, best of luck, and if its a goer for you, I'd certainly look forward to seeing some great pictures

Puppy farms should be banned. I have heard Borzois are sought after in wales and i wouldn't let any go there for that reason.

I'm not going to breed Borzoi lurchers if i won't be able to sell them to responsible people. I don't even know if they would sell. That's another reason. i wouldn't want to be stuck with 10 Borzoi cross puppies. I don't hear of Borzoi crosses often at all.

If i did have a litter i'd think that alot of illegal coursers would be after them and if they got caught, then they would dispose of the dog. I love every puppy dearly that i breed, and i have had one of my pups mistreated by his owner before, he is now living with me. His owner got bored with him at 10 months old, he had been beaten. starved and used for stud (he wanted to mount every bitch in my house).

He is now castrated, a good healthy weight and trained couldn't ask for a better dog.

I'm very wary of poeple who come to buy a pup from me and if i don't like the person i tell them they aren't having a puppy. I don't think i'd want to risk this with a Borzoi lurcher. i would really love a pup from my lurcher bitch tho by my Borzoi dog. If only she had the one puppy!

Your really putting a lot of consideration into this sighthoundlover

Cant say as I've ever came across a genuine borzoi x (few alledeged, but there was reason to doubt the authenticity of the claims) wonder if its because up here the borzoi are in numerically small number and the only breeder/owner I know is quite wary of people without a good knowledge of the breed, (like yourself rightly so) and wont part with a hound if the potential owners hav'nt done their homework or are not prepared to learn he wont entertain them at all.

Wonder why the borzoi coat does'nt come through in a cross?

All the best, whatever you decide (and my money is on you'll go for it  even if you do end up keeping the whole litter 'cos you cant bear to part with them  sure you wont have to - there will be responsible, knowledgeable homes available)

Thanks for your comments Bappit. I will only ever know what a true Borzoi cross is if i breed them myself. I would have thought some of the pups would have a Borzoi coat. They would be fairly large to.

I know what you mean with the Borzoi breeder. I got mine when he was six months old because the several people that wanted him before i found him weren't suitable. My dogs breeder is very choosy which is the best attitude to have in dog breeding imo.

I have a litter of lurcher pups now and i am being choosy of their owners. I have 4 owners of pups nowand they are all genuine good lurcher people. One of them has a pup from me last year and is forever shouting praises about it. :)) She is lovely mind. There are many good knowledgeble people out there, it's just sorting them out of the bad.

Heres my friends Borzois for you - Lilly. Hope you dont mind.
