I dont think any of our dogs were already registered when we picked them up for the same reasons that Wendy gave but we have known the breeders quite well beforehand so it was never a worry.
Thats the poiunt Judy, you knew the breeders so knew you would definatly get the paper work, the problem lies when someone buys from a newspaper ad and gets a promise of the paperwork being forwarded later? this could be genuine but the problem is for those who buy one and the papers never turn up their stuck! the KC dont seem interested in helping so theres noone they can turn to.

Also you pay more money for a dog with papers so those bits of paper might cost you an extra couple of hundred quid, which if you don't get them it's bad news

Yep, I quite agree. Buying from someone you don't know is a risk. All you can do is try and find out about them first. I think I would want the KC papers when I picked the puppy up if I knew nothing at all about the breeders. A lot of people make empty promises.

When i was looking into getting a whippet, i looked on the internet for breeders etc... i was in contact with a lady who lived in Weston-S-Mare, she was just about to breed her bitch or was waiting to hear if she was having pups.

In the mean time i found an ad in the local Trade it, for a whippet in Shepton Mallet :- " , i rang her up and went down to look at the pup.....Loved her paid and brought her home that day.....The breeder gave me KC papers etc...

She did have another whippet which had little pups and all had been claimed/bought before hand....Tilly was about 3 months old when we got her.

I didnt know anything about the breeder or really about buying a ped whippet, she did ask some questions like, have you had a dog before, and said she would ring me later in the year to see how i was getting on....that was about it really... :(

So i guess i did it all wrong

Anybody thinking of getting a puppy should go to a dog show (or race/lure meeting) and talk to several breeders there. It's a good place to meet breeders and their dogs without feeling pressured.

It may be good idea to find out what exactly the "papers" look like and how the certificate has to be filled in so you can have the puppy transferred to your name. Here in Australia we have Main register (blue certificate) or Limited Register (red certificate), both have to be properly filled in and signed to be of any use to the buyer. The buyer should also always insist on being given a receipt stipulating the pup is registered. Especially, if you are told the papers will be sent later.

Before you go to see the puppies ask if tthey will be vaccinated, wormed, vet checked and if they are registered. So you know exactly what you are getting.

I have heard of breeders who tell you they will bring the pups to your place, to see if you have suitable fencing and to save you the trip.

Well, that is very nice, but I would insist to see how they keep their dogs before I would buy a pup from anybody.

I am sure there are people who breed unregistered dogs and take a good care of them, bring the litters up correctly and you can get from them wonderful pets. However, people who are not members of the KC do not need to follow any rules. I do not know anything how it is over there in UK, here KC has a code of ethics which means we cannot breed from bitches when they are too young, too old and must not breed every time they comes in season. Also, if a breeders of registered pups do not do the right thing you can lodge a complaint against them. There is nowhere to complain about problems with not registered puppy.

Im soory if anyone thought I was meaning every breeder who dosnt hand you the papers is bad I know there are quite a few times when there is a very good reason why they are not with the pup on pick up. What I meant was those people who dont ever get the papers were probably never going to get them because the breeders of those sorts of litters have already spent the money.

All you can do when buying a puppy is your best. Are they clean and healthy, is mum ok. I dont think I would ever recommend anyone buy a show dog or racing dog unless they have been to a few shows or race meetings first and got to know some people.

While we are on this subject (well slightly ;) ) does anyone know if there is a limit to how many litters a bitch can have registered to her with the UK KC?

One I know of has just had her 5th litter registered. She's had 5 litters in just under 6 years.

I thought that there was a limit to the number of litters but I could be wrong.

I think it is 6 or 7 (w00t) litters the bitch must be over 1 year and under 8 years

Hi BJ

The Rules on Bitchs having pups registerd with the KC are, They will not accept registrations for a litter bred off a bitch under 12 months old, a bitch can only have 6 litters registerd and the KC will not accept registrations for litters off a bitch over 8 years old, and there must be 12 months between litters registerd from a bitch.

Thanks Mark and Therpan.

Some info from the BRS.

This bitch was born 18/8/1999.

She had her first litter 25/8/2001, that was the second time that she'd been mated as she missed the first time, from then on these are the DOB's 27/5/2002 ; 7/9/2003 ; 12/5/2004 and she had another litter a couple of weeks ago. I'm sure that they will be KC reg as I've been told that the owner is asking £500 per pup. The breeder has produced puppies from 3 bitches so far this year and if they have all been bought at £500 then the breeder has earned £11,000. Less costs of course. :- "

i have also heard that as long as you get a vet certificate you can breed if it comes into season and accidently gets mated in less than the twelve months between litters the kc says you should have but at twelve pound per puppy for registration then ten pound per puppy for new owners this dosent surprise me
