Hi, i was just wondering if there are any restrictions on breeding dogs in the home, and if anybody should be checking the property. The reason i ask this is because there is a woman in my village who has 3 bitches each of whom she breeds every season they have, she keeps em in her living room in a crate with the mother until about 4weeks and then shuts the mother out. Now this to me sounds a bit strange. (however i do not know much if nothing about breeding.) just wondering if anyone can shed a little light on the subject for me?

No restrictions at all about breeding at home ,,but ,,,,,,maybe a visit from the RSPCA would shake her up into being a better and more caring owner .Just ring them on a pretex , you dont have to give your name and address so there is no comeback

Im not into the RSPCA at all BTW ,but those dogs sound as if they have an awful life :( What breed are they ?

What about the local Environmental Health or Dog Warden? If you are classed as a 'breeder' you have to meet certain regulations with the local council. Also if she is selling them (adverts in local papers etc.) maybe the tax people might be interested (it is all income!), same applies if she is on any social benefits. I would not usually 'shop' people, but where animals are concerned I have no hesitation!

I'm not 100% sure about this, (I'm sure someone else will know) but I thought if anyone bred more than 5 litters per year they were automatically considered to be a commercial breeder and had to be licensed? If this lady is breeding 3 bitches each season then that would probably apply - though proving the number of litters could be difficult.

Give your local council's environmental health department a call.

Poor dogs. Sounds like the worst kind of BYB breeding for as much money as she can get without a thought for the dogs or the puppies' welfare :( :(

The puppies are jack russel terriers. She is on benefits as she doesn't have a job and has two children. and sells the pups as "pedigree" which they aren't for £150 for dogs and £200 for bitches. Does anyone know how i could get in touch with the environmental health / dog warden? The dog warden comes up to the rescue center but i never get chance to speak to her much.

Many Thanks for your help, it is much appreciated

The environmental health/dog warden phone number should come under your local town hall/council offices.

I am sure the benefits agency would be interested as well, as you are supposed to declare ALL income to them - if she is charging that amount of money for the pups then even a small litter (say 5 pups) will generate an income of nearly 1,000 pounds!! Multiply this by three bitches and twice a year seasons and that is quite an income! Their telephone lines are confidential, you could find the phone number for benefit fraud (that is what it is) from your local job centre. You are also supposed to pay tax on all income.

Hope this helps the dogs!!! People like this need to be stopped, well done for being interested! Too many people look the other way, think it is nothing to do with them - that is why the rescue centres are full!! She probably sells them to anyone who comes up with the money regardless of suitability. Also the pups probably have temperament and health problems.

Glad you are following this through!

the breeding of dogs act states any premises where 2 or more bitches are kept for the purpose of breeding for sale.it actually can be interpreted in law as any premises where 2 or more bitches are kept that are capable of being bred from,in other words if they havent been spayed.the kennel club willl supply the enviromental health people with all neccessary info about any litters bred and registered.if they arent regisered then local papers being used for adverts can pull all their info about pups being advertised from her address or phone number as they have to keep records also

I think that applies only if you are a registered breeder not just a `normal person ` I could be wrong :- " but I think weve had this before
