Hi everyone,

I've been enjoying reading all the advice re: puppies in the FAQ section of K9. I have one question that wasn't addressed - can anyone help?

We will be driving 3 hours to collect our little Alfie in a few weeks time. Should we take Rosie, our 11 year old whippet, with us?

I am still debating whether to "crate or not to crate" during the journey. Rosie NEVER sits in the car hatchback-boot, she has pride of place, with her various blankets & toys on the back seat. If i put a crate in the back seat too, there would be no space for me to sit to comfort him......or if i sit with him on my lap, little Miss. Roise would probably strop!

any advice?

I didn't take my other 2 with me when I went to get Spry as that was a good few hours journey, also I wanted to introduce them at home, I didn't use a crate either(personal preference) I just covered myself with sheets and towels incase of accidents and cuddled her on the back seat, also did this with the other two when they came home.

As it happened she just slept and wasn't sick at all but both the others were so I'd go armed with kitchen towel, carrier bags and plenty of stuff to cover yourself with and if you decide to crate take extra bedding or sheets for it

Hope this helps, good luck with your new puppy :luck: and don't forget lots of pics for us

No we also left Oscar at home as we had 3 hours drive there to pick up our pup in Scotland.

I did like Lesley sat in the back seat with plenty towels and blankets, couple of bags in case he was sick - and he was several times. :x a couple of toys - he did sleep most of the journey when he wasnt being sick and we had a couple of short stops for him to have a pee. Also had a bottle of water and a bowl at hand.

Good luck :luck: - I bet you are so looking forward to it now. You wont forget that first journey - its just

We did take Josie when we went for Lola 2 weeks ago, because it was 3 hours each way and I wasn't going to leave her at home on her own for that long :(

Like Rosie, Josie has pride of place on the back seat with a harness which links into the middle lap belt and her adoring fans (my daughters) sit either side of her  and that's where she was when we picked up Lola. I sat in the front with Lola (and her litter sister Kushi who we were collecting for someone else) both on my lap inside a cat-carrying basket with a top-loading lid which I could open and stroke them. They both travelled really well (a bit wriggly at times) and Josie was safe in the back so although she was aware of new pups in the front, the proper introduction was saved for later when we got home. Although she did have a quick sniff when we went in to get the pups, though if I remember rightly.

It was a long journey, but the pups were safe. I would have felt very unsafe if I hadn't had them contained in the carrier, even if it had only been Lola. You feel surprisingly vulnerable so close to the windscreen when you have a defenceless little body in your arms - and it doesn't bear thinking about if there's an emergency stop!

Edited to say: I wasn't intending to criticise anyone else not using a carrier, because when I collected Josie last year I sat in the back with her just in my arms and she was fine. It was all cosy and snuggly. But I don't think you have a choice except to sit in the front this time if the back seat is Rosie's domain  and for me personally it was quite an odd feeling and I know I was glad to have the pups contained :b

Here are some pics :D

Helen those pictures could have been of Byron and Macey (w00t) (w00t)

Thanks everyone for the advice.

Rosie can easily have a baby sitter if needed, so i'm still trying to decide what to do for the best.

For those that left their older dog at home, did you introduce the puppy straight into the home? or in a 'neutral' place, and then take them both home?

When Byron came home, we just introduced them in the garden. No problems what so ever.

I think if the older is socalised already there should not be a problem. Just make sure you have enough room on your lap for both of them for some time to come!!

We took lacey and cally with us to get indy. as indy had nevr been aywere without another dog with her we thought she would be haper being abell to see another dog. as we have an mpv we had leads of room for a creat plus a greyhound and whippet in the back. But if you wont to take your other dog and are short of space why not see if you can bourgh a cat carryer for the jurny as there only little when why you first pic them up

Hi Helen Lola looks absolutly adorable and has grown since i last saw her still think shell be the image of her big sister indy though

I personally went in and sat with Spry and let the girls sniff at her whilst making a fuss of them, then I put her down and they sniffed her allover again and I mean ALLOVER every inch  then I left them to it to get to know each other but under supervision

 She is India-The-Second isn't she??!! She has grown - she's bigger at 10 weeks than Josie was... 4.35kg yesterday (w00t) whereas Josie was 3.8kg at 10 weeks.

I'm so excited for you Rebecca. Whatever you do, it will be fine because I think it's the way you are that's more important than where/when etc.

Have you got any photos?

When I go to pick a pup up its normaly at an open in England :) . I sit with the pup and John drives. If the dogs are racing that day, they see the new pup. When we went to collect Sophie and Ricky,,they went home in the cage together till Sophie was dropped off at her new home,,the other dogs were with us that day also, as it was Champ Weekend. I did pick up one pup BJ,,we went to the bend champs for him and as we never had dogs running they saw him for the first time at home,,no problems,,they got on very well

Thanks everyone

OH & i are meeting Alfie this Saturday. I am beside myself with excitement! :)

For when the eventful day arrives in 4-6 weeks time, I have borrowed a smal cat-carry crate, with opening top, just in case i have a wriggler! - if not, he's be on my lap in the back seat - whilst OH drives. Rosie will come, and be in her 'pride of place' - i think it will be good for her to see & know there's a babe with us. fingers crossed!

Thanks again for all your advice.

I will take lots of photos this weekend.

Sounds like you are all prepared then rebecca - Good Luck :luck: :luck:

Just to add Oscar wasnt HOME ALONE either when we went to pick Kobi up - my daughter was looking after him. :huggles: They kept ringing the mobile to say "Where are you now - how far till you get home???   )

as bad as when they come with you  :- "

:b oh god I honestly didn't mean to imply that anyone was leaving their dog home alone  I only mentioned our situation because unfortunately we live so far away from family that Josie would have been alone if we'd left her :( My neighbour is lovely and would have popped in, but our street isn't really a "doggy" neighbourhood so I take Josie everywhere with me if I think I'm going to be more than 3 or 4 hours.

Hope you enjoy the journey, Rebecca. It's a special thing full of memories, so make sure you and OH take lots of photos!
