Josephine has snapped off about 1/3 of a canine tooth. She went to the vet yesterday, they said there was nothing they could do except file the sharp edges down to stop her cutting herself, and that it might die and go a strange colour, but that it would not fall out. I'm worried as it seems to have broken into the pulp and I'm sure she needs it.

Have you heard of any alternative ways of dealing with it? Is it possible to cap them or something so it doesn't risk going rotten?

Years ago Tegan snaped the tip of one of her fangs .Its never bothered her and the toth is ok not changed colour or anything .

But she did only snap the tip of that little that even though I kow about no one else ever does even the judges at shows never mention it

I'm sure there must besome way they could cap it though althoug I'veneve heard of it

Years ago I used to assist a fabulous veterinary dentist called Peter Kertesz who came to our practice on a referral basis occasionally, and he capped my cat's broken tooth beautifully! He does a lot of work on large animals at London Zoo too.

He is still in practice in Bayswater http://www.bayswaterveterinaryreferrals.co...rinary+Surgeons

Might be worth getting a referral if the pulp is exposed, as it could get very painful. :luck:

So sorry to kear about Josie :huggles:

I think the link that Beth has put on is great and have saved it my favourites :- "

I have to say that I think that I would try and get a referral

I had a dog break a canine years ago, and I was advised to have root canal treatment done, as otherwise over time it would have become infected and very painful.

He kept the tooth (or what was left of it), but it was effectively 'dead' as the nerve had been removed and it did become discoloured and quite unsightly. I know that in America it's not unusual for animals to have broken teeth capped, but it doesn't seem common here.

I have a friend who breeds airdale terriers, her young dog broke two of his small font teeth and she saw a specialist with him.

All he could do was take them out as he told her the dogs bite is so powerfull he would just break the crown if he did it.

sadly that was the end of his show career he had 7 res cc's at the time and his sister went on to be top winnig airdale that year with 18cc's and best of breed at crufts
