I feel really dreadful, i was out ferreting with Vixen yesterday. When i washed her feet and checked her over when we got back she was fine.

I put her in her kennel at 11pm last night and she seemed fine then too. However when let her out to take her for her morning exercise i noticed a large bruise on her front left leg. I put some gold label witch hazel and arnica gel on it straight away and only took her for a short lead walk.

Now Vixen is not at all lame on the leg so i havn't given her any metacam or anything i've just applied the witch hazel and arnica gel 3-4 times today. I've also given her a few arnica tablets too.

Is there anything else i could put on it or do to speed up the healing process??. obviously i will be resting Vixen for a couple of days until the bruising has gone down, although there is not to be any swelling i don't want to risk any further injury.

I have no idea at all how she's done it as i didn't notice her run into anything yesterday.

your advice is appreciated

I swear by arnica Mally, Ive always kept it in for the dogs in and I also use Symphytum 15C pillules from Dorwest herbs. Ive even raided the dogs first aid kit and taken both myself when I sprained my ankle. I hope Vixen will be ok soon.

Thanks for that, Vixen is ok in herself and she wonders what all the fuss is about and why i keep rubbing the cold gel on her leg. She even wanted to chase a cat 5 minutes ago when i put her back in her kennel lol. It looks alot worse than it is. I'm just a bit upset that i missed it yesterday. At least i'm doing something right by giving her arnica. I just hope it gets better soon as i have alot of rabbiting to do and i won't go ferreting without her.

I wonder if it could be burst blood vessels brought about by momentary high blood pressure, rather than a bruise?

It doesn't look particularly swollen which would suggest that impact wasn't involved and as she isn't lame it is probably unlikely to be bleeding caused by a strain to the muscle.

Does she react to touch?

I'd give her a couple of quiet days to be on the safe side and continue with the arnica as it certainly can't do any harm and it may be helping her

Gentle massage of the leg (you can use aloe vera gel on it) will help to disperse the bruising and keep the muscles and ligaments flexible around that area.

Hope she is back to normal quickly for you

She's her normal self and she doesn't react at all when i touch it, it does look like a bruise but i didn't notice her hit anything yesterday although she could have done as she is rather rapid when chasing bolting rabbits. As you said i'll keep her quiet for a few days to be on the safe side

I was given some Gold label gel by a greyhound man and have to say it's amazing stuff for bringing out and dispersing bruising.

Bruising is effected by gravity so she may be injured further up and that's why she's not limping or experiencing any discomfort. It might be she's clipped something with her shoulder or something minor like that but if your in any doubts Paul you might want to get her checked out. I think Rob Meeks does rounds in your area unless of course you have a preference with anyone else your already familiar with.

Hope your better soon Vixen :luck:

Thanks for that, never thought it could be the result of an injury further up. I will probably get robert to take a look at her next week if things don't improve  The amount of work she's been doing recently its not a surprise that she's taken a knock. I think an awful lot of Vixen and i won't be working her until i'm sure she's fit and well.

Your dogs have always been in excellent condition. Whatever's going on I'm sure you'll get to the bottom of it and have her on her usual form.

Was going to say the same as Jac, she could have a minor injury higher up and the bleed has worked its way down. Only other advice i'd give would be to treat the whole leg rather than just where the bruise is until you can get her checked. One of mine had a small tear high up (near his boy bits) and the bruising came out near his stifle.

I wouldn't feel bad about not spotting it, it may have only come out over night.

She does look in excellent condition, i've never seen a pedigree whippet with such fab muscle tone, you're a credit to each other.

Ouch

Don't know if it helps but Finn has actually had something that looked very similar after he slipped off the dog walk at agility and scraped the length of his upper leg across the edge of the top plank ... he seemed ok at the time but by morning had a scrape much like Vixens ... no break in the skin but no deep bruising or swelling such as you'd get from a hard knock either, and no obvious pain or lameness. I used arnica tablets, witch hazel applied topically and cold compresses. He was fine after a couple of days :)

Hope she's soon back to normal :luck: Finn sends his sister a playful shove

I use arnica gel or cream....swear by it..

I have also a arnica and witchazel gel...brilliant stuff.

I use Arnica & Witch Hazel Gel . Get it from the local horse shop.

I checked on Vixen yesterday morning and the bruising on the inside of her leg was much much better, Unfortunately though more bruising has come out on the outside of her leg. I treated her 5 ties yesterday with the witch hazel and arnica gel as well as arnica tablets. Again vixen is showing no lameness at all, and she has full movement in both legs and shoulders. I took her for a walk around the shoot but obviously kept her on the lead. I'll keep her quiet for a few days until the bruising has gone and see how she is then.

Sounds like you are doing all the right things. Hope she is better soon. :) :)
