Hi all! Feel like a bond is beginning after 48 hours with our new doggie Lizzie. She is still not toilet trained, but I guess that takes more than 48 hours. She still does not realise that a house is not the place for wees and poos!!! She is supposed to be about 3 years old and I think she has never been in a house before. :b

She is very affectionate, and is learning 'sit' and 'down' and 'come' but 'wee' and 'poo' are still a mystery.

Any of you out there had a doggie who wets inside their crate - which I had thought was their special den and never soiled?????

Help!

Just beginning to get more confidence when out on a lead, but not performing at all. Bless...

:))

We had exactly this problem with our Josephine (the hairy one in my signature). She was 11 months when we got her in September, she had had very little human contact and had never been indoors. She did everything in her crate and no where else (oh except in the river on walks  ). It took time (like about 2 months) to get her completely clean in the house, but the only think you can do is persevere. Wash her bed thoroughly everytime there is an accident (I had 3 beds in rotation). Never punish her for accidents, tons and tons of praise as soon as she does it outside. It is worth trying to get some of the smell of her pee outside so she gets the idea that is where to go. Next time she pees on her bed take it outside and squeeze the pee out of it where you want her to go (a bit unpleasant, but effective).

It will happen, it just takes time, good luck :luck: :luck: :luck: :luck: Have faith that she will learn, as she gets more relaxed with her new home she will think more calmly about these things.

How about a pic of her?

Hi there!

Im new to this site too as I picked up my new beautiful puppy whippet 1 week ago - Maddie who is 8 weeks old today!

We have her in a house crate at night & at certain times during the day - which she has taken to well. In the first few days she did have a few accidents in the cage - but fingers crossed for the past few days, she hasnt soiled.

My tips are to cover the whole kennel floor with bedding so hopefully she wont soil it, let her out frequently & praise her lavishly with treats when she does get it right & gradually increase the time between toileting so she can manage to hold. Dont scold her for accidents, as dogs only remember what they have done 1 second ago - unless you catch her in the act. Dont let her see you cleaning up her mess (as this can give her satisfaction), and scrub the area with 10% biological washing liquid & 90% surgical spirit as this removes the fat & protein content of her pee - as this cannot be removed with other cleaning products & she will continue to reinforce the smell by "topping it up". Another thing I have is a D A P diffuser plugged in next to Maddie's house cage - this is a "Dog Appeasing Pheromone" diffuser that gives off feel good pheromones to her - that a mother gives of to her pups to make her feel calm & secure - This I got from the Vets.

Hope this helps,Naomi :))

Congratulations all you new dog owners  and Welcome to K9.

Good Luck Maz with Lizzie :luck: :luck: , Im sure she will learn in know time - once she knows shes safe and can trust everyone around her. Well done you for taking her on. :huggles:

and Good luck Naomi with your new whippet Maddie. :luck: :luck:

Good luck with her and well done for taking her on. Keep us posted on how she progresses. Good luck with the house training. I always think a strict routine is the best way to toilet train and frequent trips out in the early stages and lots of praise when she goes in the right place.

I do not have much experience with other dogs except sighthounds and Great Danes, and they all were always very clean. Even small baby puppies in the nest would start to crawl away from their bedding to go to toilet, as soon as they could. I always have bedding just comfortably big enough for the bitch and her pups and put newspapers to cover rest of the pen. Later on I put the newspaper just in one corner.

If your Lizzie was confined as a puppy, or even for most of her life, in a small area for long periods of time she would not have a choice but to relieve herself in there, and now she does not know any better. To break that habit you need to take her out as often as possible and praise her if she goes to toilet outside. Always take her out soon after she has eaten if at all possible do not let her come in until she has done something. At this moment I would not punish her or even tell her off, you need to build strong relationship with her first. Praise her lavishly and reward her when she does the right thing.

:luck: :luck: :luck:

Thanks for advice!! She's being a sweetie, and we are lovin' her so much already! She is beginning to understand about wees outside, but I'm afraid the number 2s are still being performed inside!!! Have put newspapers down now, and plan to move them closer to the door every night. Am wondering how to make the transition from the door to outside tho!

Also - she goes beserk when she sees her reflection in the patio doors!!!!! She is so docile most of the time, but looks like she'd bite a gorrilla's leg off when she sees herself in the door!!!

How often does she need to poo? My dogs generally do only one or two a day, usually pretty soon after feed. If you can predict when she needs to go and take her out that would make it easier. With little pups I can always tell they are getting ready to poo. :D They start walking very purposefully in circles, like they are searching for the perfect spot on my rug. Usually they go faster and faster with their nose to ground, looking more and more frantic, and that is the time to call them and race out of the door into the garden.

I am sure Lizzie is going to learn soon, poor thing I wonder what her life story is. Sounds as if you will have to be careful with her and other dogs. :luck:
