Hi all, I'm new to the group, so hello

I would like to buy a Weimarada in July or there abouts .

I've been told the dog is the better one to own.

Are there any known problems with this bread ?

He will be my first pedigree dog.

Where can I get a nice one with credible checks ?

I live close to Glasgow.

Any advice would be great, thank you.

The only thing I can suggest is that you check the Kennel Club website for breeders. You then have loads of research to do to find out what kind of checks the breeders do, find a breeder who will show you evidence that they have done them and expect to be asked lots and lots of questions.

The pedigree puppy world is a minefield. It is hard to find out what kind of health problems are emerging as the breeders do not want to admit to them. I went to a few dog shows and tried to talk to non breeders about the health issues to look out for and to ask for recommendations.

A good breeder should be running a waiting list for puppies. They should only breed when they need a puppy to bring on for their own purposes. If they are breeding regularly, and selling all the puppies, then be careful as they may not have the best interests of the breed in mind.

I would be cautious to be honest as a good responsible breeder should have a waiting list before mating takes place . Please be very wary about breeders that will just let you turn up to purchase a pup. But also , without meaning to be rude if you have to ask if there are known problems with this breed you haven't done enough research . In order to find a good healthy pup you should know what the problems are and what to look for in health checks of the parents and grandparents . This research will also give you some idea of what you should be asking the breeder too. Good luck with your search

I am not experienced in buying pedigree pups as I tend to rescue/rehome but what I will say is this...be very very careful and wary re breeders. My gorgeous pedigree whippet boy was bought by myself when he was one from the breeder who had taken him off his original home as he wasn't being looked after (underweight, skin problems, riddled with wormed, nervous wreck) the pedigree line was of no interest to me as he is a pet and I wanted to give him a good home however I have found out he is epileptic and have made many attempts to contact the breeder and others who are breeding from his relations and I am getting nowhere. I am being ignored and have had to write to the kennel club. The health issue is being avoided, most likely because it will interfere in their money making, and dogs are still being bred from this line despite my having advised of the epilepsy and that it can be hereditary....it has made me very wary of breeders now. On a brighter note I wish you every success in finding your perfect pup! A lady I know rehomes older weimeranas and they are all such lovely gentle souls! x
