Feeding more calcium wont stop them breaking legs Im afraid. It is more to do with lack of bone density which is hereditory. The bone becomes weaker the more people breed around and around the same dogs.
Unfortunately there are lines that carry more chance of leg breaks than others.
Having said that any dog can break its leg its just the circumstances that dictate if it is a complete accident or as a result of bad breeding. For example I know of a bitch who broke both front legs just jumping up and down for its dinner, now that is seriously wrong. Any dog with long bone is vulnerable more so than stocky breeds ie Whippets, afghans, sulukis.
The most vulnerable time for Iggies is up to 18 months and known as the greenstick stage.
The amount of exercise an lggie gets wont stop a leg break but does help because the dog builds muscle and learns to take the knocks and bumps. Caging or restricting exercise of an Iggie is a big no.
The cost of repairing a broken leg is now about £2,000 plus. I cannot believe people breed from dogs who have broken legs where there is a hereditory condition and were not pure accidents. The heartache that is passed on to the new owners is unforgivable. The screaming when the break happens, the 6 weeks cage rest, the plates causing infection if you are unlucky. Legs not mending straight and worst case scenario legs having to be amputated.
Nikki, I would suggest you speak to the breeders of your dogs and ask the question are there any leg breaks in my dogs lines? That would be more useful for you to know than anything else really
