We have a 10 yr old whippet who has trouble with her legs. Her front feet knuckle under when she walks and she quite often falls over because of it. We have taken her to the vets and they think that it may be her neck, however she does not seem to be in pain with it. We cannot take her for walks anymore as her claws wear away so much that they end up bleeding. Its almost as if she has no feeling in her feet. The vet did give her a thorough examination stretching and pulling her about to see if there were any signs of discomfort but nothing.

Has anyone ever had a similar experience with any of their whippets and do you know what caused it. The vet has given her a strong course of steroids which she is currently taking to see if she improves.

Hi, welcome to K9. Have you thought about trying a chiropractor or an Acupuncturist? I haven't used either for my Whippets ( though have used both personally). I know other people have had good results. Good luck with her, hope she improves. :luck:

Hi Acrylicon :))

I'm sure I remember reading in JR Whippet Rescue magazine about a lady who had a couple of whippets with symptoms very similar to yours, and they were eventually diagnosed with a condition known as Wobbler's Syndrome, which is more commonly found in Dobermanns. It may be worth mentioning this as a possibility to your vet to see if he could check this out for you, or refer you to a specialist.

Best of luck with your little whippet, you must be very concerned about her. :luck: :luck: :luck:

We had this very problem with one of our dogs Monty last year. We thought we may have to say goodbye.

The vet couldnt find anything on xray, Monty had a cortison jab and we went home not really knowing what to do. The muscles in his shoulders seemed to totally waste away really quickly, and he didnt seem to know if he was standing on his pads or the tops of his feet so used to just fall over. If he did stand both legs would quiver like mad.

David massaged his neck and shoulders and down his legs 2 or 3 times a day, we didnt walk him out at all until he got the muscles firm again.

You could take her to a specialist but I cant think they will be able to do much more than you can yourself providing the dog is not in pain.

Monty is 100% now, it took about 6 weeks.

Did your girl pull on the lead when she went out, Monty was a puller and I think it was some sort of trapped nerve between his shoulders.

Hope this is of some help, best of luck anyway.

:( Poor lamb. Sorry, I can't offer any advice, but good luck in finding an answer, you must find this very distressing. Do keep us posted on how you get on won't you :luck:

Had similar problem with Mo my 11 year old whippet. Vet diagnosed trapped nerve. Had anti-inflammatory medicine. I do have to be careful with her and she now wears a harness on walks as she does seem to have a weakness in her neck area. Good luck with your whippet :)
