Curious as to why Billy seems to have succumbed to sneezing fits recently, and last night was punctuated with instances where it sounded like he was sneezing backwards

Kind of hawking and hacking like a footballer about to clear his nose :x

He seems more-or-less himself, maybe a little more lethargic, but that could be down to a chasing squirrels session in the woods yesterday.

I just wondered if it was something that he'd get over in a day or so, and whether he needs to be kept inside.

To be honest, I'd not heard of dogs catching colds before?

:( Sounds like Kennel Cough........ same thing as a cold in humans and just as catching !

Aaahhhh - other dog-walkers have mentioned there had been a lot of it about -

I must confess to not having any experience with it; I presume a trip to the vet is in order then? :(

There is kennel cough going round but there's also a mild cold flying round too, mine have had the cold which involved a runny wet nose a bit of sneezing and a very mild cough of about 2/3 short boughts per day. I knew it wasn't kennel cough because it was just so mild and 2 days later the cat got it too. I wasn't laughing at the cat's sneezing honest! :- "

It didn't last longer than 2 days with each dog and none of mine was lethargic in any way so that should give you an idea of which virus they've got but of course if you have any doubts or your dog is a very young pup or elderly then I'd get things checked just to be sure.

Hope Billy makes a speedy recovery. :luck:

Whippets can get a fungal infection in the nasal passages. Antibiotics won't touch it & if it gets established little else will. I'd suggest you take her to a vet with good experience of long muzzled breeds. We had our lovely little bitch pts this morning she had a nasal discharge for years. She could have gone down with a stroke like her mum but the vet reckons the mucous could have worked it's way into her brain.
