now I've got my lovely new car (peugeot 206 estate) I'd like to make the back 'Monty' proof :- "

anyone got any recommendations? :)

thanks

ive got an escort estate and just put a normal cage in the boot

how did your sons birthday go ????? your still living i see

I have had several " Hamster basket" crates. I'm not winding you up, they are really called that.

Huya, I splashed out on guardman cage as it has escape doors so if you get tailgated god forbid you can still get the dogs out. Only the best for Monty :clown:

They're the best for cages built for specific models of car. I used them for my 405 estate car. The cage was expensive but fitted like a glove.

Then I bought their general estate cage for my 406 estate car and it fitted perfectly too.. they took the 405 parts as a trade-in. The 406 cage was a double cage with doors at the front and back and was just perfect.

Now I drive a 4wd and just have an ordinary cage on one side with the single back seat folded down. The rest of the dogs are in the boot-space. I couldn't get the general estate cage into the 4wd which was a real pity because I felt the dogs were safer in a cage.

thanks guys

I've just got a Hamster baskets cage, as our estate was just an inch too narrow to take a standard car cage. I'm pleased with it, it really uses the space well but the only thing I don't like are the gaps for putting your hands through as a) they can get their jaws round them and chew them when they're excited, so I have to muzzle them for their safety b) they can get their heads through, so the flippin muzzles get pulled straight off. Yours probably never get as demented as mine do at running events so maybe it's less of an issue. I think OH can probably improvise something or I might as the man who makes them if he can provide something to solve the problem.

I totally recommend Hamster Basket. They did a fanstastic job customising a crate and platform for our car. The crates are wonderful, and the price is VERY reasonable!

So definitely another vote for them from me.

You can see our setup here http://groups.msn.com/savvychels/hamsterbasket.msnw click on any of the thumbnails to view the whole picture, or click on the first one, then click the next arrow to scroll through them

I notice you have covers for the access holes; did they come as standard or did you have to ask for them? (I thought they came with them as standard, which is why I didn't mention it when I ordered).

I had a Barjo cage in my Astra hatchback but found the thing so heavy and cumbersome that I only ever used it when I went lurecoursing plus I found the door kept coming off!! Waste of £200 that was!

Now I have my Golf Estate I just use a 36 x 24 standard crate, again only when I go lure coursing and I can also get a 31 x 21 crate on the folded down back seat so can take lots of dogs!!!

I don't normally travel them in crates other than that but just have the whole of the back flat with loads of duvets and they settle down much more easily.

with 9 dogs i carnt fit them all in creats so they all have harnesse and seatbelts. could you not put a dog gaurd up behind the seats

I use a Lintran box (the lindale) they are fantastic and can be moved to different vehicles in seconds.

They also come with lockable doors so you can leave the boot open at events when it's hot without the worry of your dogs being stolen

are hamster cages easy to use with the door lifting up? or have you all got side opening doors?

Side opening. I find them quite easy; they have 2 'lever' catches per door which are pretty firm so they can't squeeze through while you're opening them that effectively.

I like the look of the lintran one too; fewer gaps for little teeth to find chewing points through perhaps (ours have some gaps to allow it to fit the curves of the wheel arches very tightly which some dogs might make the most of :b Mine haven't noticed them yet o:) ). They don't come with a base; they suggest carpet although we cut up the box it came in, and then put cushions etc on top.

Forgot to say, ours was £275 + delivery inc. 2 doors and a central divider, which I haven't yet used. Wish it had come with those hole covers though.

I'd never use just a dog guard, as when whippets are in an excited state they can squeeze round the edges, gnaw holes in the fabric of the roof to squeeze through, or just destroy the boot area for the sake of it (seen all of this happen). Also they can mess the glass up all the windows in the back with their noses (I'm still feeling car proud, it can't last though :b )

 thats a good point, hadn't thought of that!

looks like its gonna be a hamster cage then

I saw a Lintrans one today at BSFA, it looked very good too. Do they fold away easily though?

Lucky you Alison having a peugoet (sp) 206 estate! Thats what i want!!!!!!

If youve got a small car do you think its safer with dogs in cages, even if the cage is right up to the boot door or with the dogs loose so they can move back abit out of way of boot door ( if that makes sense) :b I worry that if i have mine in the boot of my car ( a corsa! (w00t) ) that if i get rammed from behind ( or my car for that fact!) that the dogs would get squashed and the metal from cage would cave in on them

I didn't know I wanted one til I saw it :- " I thought I'd get a punto or a picanto

I know what you mean about the small boot thing, my old car (which I loved and miss :( ) was an old VW polo, I was always worrying about what to do for the best

I decided the dogs are more at risk of getting chucked around and hurt if the car got hit, or of escaping through broken windows than of the squashed thing happening :x

I guess its the same as life, you do what you can then hope for the best :sweating:

edited to say, maybe seatbelts harnesses are better for a small number of dogs in a small car?
