After all your great help with the whining, i thought i'd see what you had to say about car sickness.

Actually it's not so much the sickness- which i'm sure he'll grow out of- but the extreme distress going in the car seem to cause monty. He has a crate that he travels in but he crys constantly and on two occasions has peed in the crate, one when we were not even moving just sat in the car on the drive trying to get him used to it. None of the journeys we have made have been more than 10 mins

Any tips on how to make it less stressful for him?

pehaps you should try him on your lap or just on a seat so that he can see out, and he feels secure by being with you not left on his own in the back of the car...

it worked with all 5 of ours... good luck

I'm not saying you won't get puked on though!

Yes absolutely works- exactly what we did. She travels wonderfully now.

But how can i drive if he is on my lap? isn't that a bit dangerous?

I would not drive with him on my lap. Can you get somebody to drive you around the block? Or just sit in a car with him on your lap, then drive to the nearest park, with him on the back seat. That way he will associate a pleasant experience (cuddle, treat and run in a park) with going in the car. :luck:

Have you thought about a car harness, the sort that you can clip into the seat belt so that the dog is secure and can't jump on your lap!!!

It does sound as though it is stress rather than travel sickness. Have you got a friend or relative who could help you by doing short journeys with you holding him on their lap? And of course, all journeys end with something nice - a lovely walk being favourite.

Good luck, I'm sure when he feels safer he will travel well and become like mine - I have to stop them jumping in any open door of anyones car now!!

My OH drove and I was the lap :teehee: (better build for it)

Yep. As a young dog I put Nelly in a car harness on the passenger seat (so she was next to me but couldnt get on my knee) sat on her comfiest blanket with a toy. Seemed to do the trick.

The old duvet trick never fails. Fold an old duvet in half. Settle pup on it in the back seat or back of the hatchback (preferably with a car-seat-belt-harness) and they are as cosy as toast. The padding seems to help muffle the vibrations

BTW ruth, have you seen our FAQ? There are lots of old threads where questions like this have been covered in detail and you should find lots of tips there  Here's the link  F A Q

Sorry ruth - hope your pup gets better from the car sickness. My Oscar got over his very quickly but Kobi is a different story - hes almnost 7 months and is still car sick (w00t) we cant even drive 3 miles and hes sick twice or thrice .....- Im hoping he will grow out of it soon too, otherwise Im going to invest in some sickness pills for dogs that contain ginger.

Sid was carsick when he first came to us - but only when he was in his crate in the back. As soon as I tried him on a harness with the window open he was fine. Our car is quite low to the ground and I did try to convince my oh that we needed a new car but he didn't "bite". o:)

Good Luck - hope Monty soon starts enjoying his trips out.

My two oldest were sick for a while and callie used to shake and slaver(sp). but they grew out of it, but Spry was very much like you have described, she just used to cry even though the other 2 were with her but one day she managed to get on the back seat and laid down and went to sleep  I think it was because she could not see us properly, now she happily travels in the back with the other two I think she just needed time to get used to it,

Good luck :luck:

Car sickness is caused by static in the car try putting some anti static strips on your car & do lots of short regular trips in the car this should help :luck:
