Hi all, I'm new here, having been directed here from another forum.

I have a very basic question to ask......would a whippet get on with my elderly chihuahua? I would like to get a companion for him as he's starting to go blind, and thought maybe a small whippet bitch over the age of three or so would fit the bill. Has anyone on here had experience of keeping these breeds together? I have the phone number of the local whippet rescue co-ordinator, so finding one shouldn't be difficult, I just want to make sure my old chap will be safe with one!

:huggles:

I haven't had much experience with these dogs but through reading alot of dog breed books and also working with lurchers in the home i would be very careful housing these dogs together as whippets and other sight hounds drive to chase could be a nuisance with ur other dog being so small. Probs be best speaking to the center where u r getting ur whippet from as they may have advice :)

I know one exhibitor who has whippets and papillions together and also know someone who has a whippet and a yorkie. They all seem to get on together.

Sorry I can't be more help.

Jenny

they both get on fine! my sis has a chihuahua, lucy an we have to whips! charlie and dylan, theres some pics on the site somewhere from a while ago showing them playing, she's always the boss tho, she is around a year old so not sure about a elderly one, as long as they're introduced properly?

My friend has both breeds and no problems at all ......... ......Welcome to K9 btw :D Hannah :)

My daughter has a tiny chihuahua Lily, she gets along with my Whippets and in past my Borzoi. Lily knows how to keep them in line. :)

I think it would only be a problem if your whippet has strong coursing instincts and they go off the lead together before they know each other well.

my italian greyhounds are tiny, but the whippets - well, only one whippet now :( - get let off seperately for their first 5 mintues to let off steam, then all off together - small dogs soon let the bigger ones know if they go too far!!!!

a nice older bitch shouldn't be any trouble at all :luck:

Thanks everyone, I think we will get a whippet companion for him, I just wanted to make sure of the whippet temprament first.

Thanks again for your advice. (And the cute pictures!)

I also have a chihuahua. :D Their a great little dog that does not know just how small they are. If you are worried dont be. after a while the chihuahua will calm down & get on with the whippet. Both can be independent, so treat each the same.

We sold a puppy earlier this year to a lady in Bournmouth who has chuwowas(sp sorry) they all get on brilliantly.
