Chip definately, i always think that if your dogs stolen with a tattoo, then the theives could cut off the ears, like some greyhound folk do, you can't go wrong with chip all my dogs are done and pups i've bred. :))

Mine are all chipped but a lot of people opt for tattoo's I think it's down to personal preference really :)

Welcome to K9 BTW

Mine are chipped and they have the type that have the thermometer in...so no more cold thermometers up the bottom for my two (w00t)

MINE ARE CHIPPED WITH THE THERMOMETER TYPE TOO.

SO DOUBLE BONUS,IN THE DOGS EYES.

BUT ITS DOWN TO INDIVIDUAL CHOICE,THE THOUGHT OF SOMEONE CUTTING A EAR OFF IS SHOCKING TO THINK.

WELCOME TO K9

But with chips these move, suddenly stop working and can be easily cut out (this has happened to stolen dogs) and some wardens do not bother to check if their scanner is working :(

I've gone for the belts and braces approach and both my dogs are chipped and tattooed.

Chips can be removed, as someone has said before, but my dog's are all micro-chipp'd and tatto'd. ;)

do you people do the tattos yourself? if not how much was you charged if you dont mind me asking?

This is perfectly true !

PennyLurchers chip stopped working , I was told by the Vet that this is quite common with lurchers as they can break if knocked.

Pennys chip had moved to the top of her shoulder and the vet was able to remove it with a blade and a pair of tweezers whilst she stood there

and she didnt bother at all !!!

All our dogs are chipped now but a few years ago we had 2 we had tattooed, but instead of in the ear we had them tattooed near the top of the inside back leg so it couldn't just be cut out.

this may be a stupid question but does the dog have to be knocked out for a tatoo or is it just sedated.

I had one of mine tattooed in his ear, he wasnt sedated, a bit of discomfort for him, but it only took a moment, he squeaked as much as when I had one of the others chipped.
