 Ros and Grover managed to snatch a box of chocolate brownie squares off the worktop this afternoon. After subtracting the number my kid had snaffled before, we worked out 14 are missing. Assuming they shared, that's obviously 7 each. These are the little squares you get in clear plastic tubs in supermarkets (about 2cm x 2cm x 2cm), not massive ones. They seemed fine (no vomiting) but have been madly hyper and fighting this evening until they flaked out asleep half an hour ago (which they would do at this time ususally anyway). They also had a few minutes where they were panting but this could have been the heat. I've not noticed other symptoms of choccy poisoning like increased thirst/ weeing etc It seems more like a sugar rush than anything!

Do you think they've had a dangerous dose or will they just sleep it off? They seem fine now, sleeping normally no fast breathing or rapid heart beat etc. God they make you worry though, don't they? Naughty buggers.

What tinkers!!

Try not to worry too much. My old whippy boy Tizer once stole an entire 1kg bar of Dairy Milk that I got for Christmas one year. He had sneaked into my bedroom and polished the whole lot off in minutes. He suffered no ill effects what so ever :sweating:

Thanks for the reassurance!

I remember when I was growing up we had no idea that chocolate was dangerous to dogs - I used to share everything with my afghan, including my chocolate. He was a lunatic though... :b

I'm sure there is very little cocoa solids in a choc brownie! My old whippet cross stole a whole bar of 70% bitter choc once, she drank and drank and shook for 24 hours and then was fine!

My old tibetan spaniel stole and devoured an entire chocolate orange once and she only weighed 10lb!!1 she had no ill effects at all!

They did have lots of choccy chips in them...but they were also from Morrisons so probably all fat and sugar, not chocolate :D

I'm sure they'll be fine :D

It sounds as though the worst is over ....... whippet thieves

Do I look like I'm having a sugar rush ? :D :D :D

My dog Peat (RIP) once stole a whole large box of after eights from under the Christmas tree. He did not suffer any ill effects :)

but don't they just love chocolate. my boy would kill for a piece of chocolate and just knows when someone in the house is eating chocolate (even when sneaked out of the cupboard and opened in the garage  ) even if he is upstairs and sound asleep - he flies downstairs at 90mph to suss it out and of course will not be fooled by those awful doggy choccy drops :x

and of course the embrassment when taking him for a walk after the kids have come home from school - that is just a scavenger hunt and you can see people looking and thinking 'look at that poor skinny dog having to eat stuff off the streets'.

but I also have never seen any ill effects

wow that chart is really useful, scarily small amount of cocoa that can hurt them :( :( Molly never gets a look in with chocolate cos my husband eats it all first :D :D

i have had dog all my life and all have eaten chocolate with no ill effects, once had a lurcher that stole a large amount over christmas and basicially vomed it up and was ok

Thank you for that chart Annie, that's really useful

Last year Callie ate all the chocolate decorations from our christmas tree - wrappers and all! :clown:

Last summer my two stole my daughter's 16th birthday cake - milk choc sponge cake, covered in milk chocolate with dark choc stars and white choc curls (I feel sick thinking about it), large enough for 15 piggy teenagers and they consumed the lot overnight. The next morning they both looked as though they swallowed footballs and I whizzed them up to the vet who said Tilly seemed fine but Pip had an erythemic heart. They were both given charcoal to eat and were absolutely fine - no squits, no sick and we learnt a valuable lesson - NOTHING IS SAFE! I'm sure they'll survive and I just hope they're not ill everywhere! :b

As you can see from the 'Family Reunion' thread, R and G are fine and dandy today except...

...when we were out this afternoon Grover decided to go to the loo just as a couple were walking past cooing over the three dogs...

....and as they passed he let out the most extraordinary raspberry fart you have ever heard. I swear it bounced off the banks of the estuary on the other side and came back. Let's just say a handful of sand would have been more useful than a poo bag. :clown: :clown: :b :b

I'm sorry, but this made me laugh, so much I woke up Blue (but only momentarily!)
