recently heard about citronella collars.. to curb unwanted behaviour anyone heard where you can buy them, or how much they cost? AND if they work!

would be interested to know......

One friend of mine bought a citronella collar for her pomeranian to stop her barking, it did not make any difference. Other friend has it for her Whippets and swears by it. But it is rather expensive, close to $200 aust. = 100 euros.

Citronella collars and their like can either work, or they can reinforce whatever behaviour you are trying to get rid of. I would never use one, it is just too risky. Barking is a sign of (even slight) insecurity on the dogs' part - if the citronella squirt frightens it, its suspicion that the situation it is in is frightening could be affirmed in the mind of the dog - it could even turn to aggression. Some seem to advocate it as a universal remedy - I should think not.

I have used one for a short time on Sprout after everything else failed to break him of his barking habit (not just normal dog barking - obsessive barking). It was absolutely fine for Sprout because he wasn't actually scared of it. I would NEVER use this on any dog who was exhibiting anxiety symptoms or who was by nature, timid. Definately not.

I think they need to be used under very controlled circumstances and by someone who knows what they're doing - or not at all.

Edited to add:- and it also depends on what sort of behaviour the collar is being considered for.

Did it work as we have an obsessive barker too- she drives me to distraction some days. If Tess won't run with her Nana stands and barks and barks and barks and barks...................... and barks and barks and Tess just stands there staring at her as if she's mad (which she may well be)

The dog training class I attend have used Citronella collars on many dogs - especially to cure barkers. It has worked for at least 75% and is not a cruel method in my opinion (Now shock collars are another story and the sooner they are banned the better) It is purely a bark activated device that emits a puff of citronella, a smell that most dogs find abnoxious. No bark - no smell!!! To me it is a very simple and effective deterent for barkers.

Some training classes use them and may let you try one out before you go to the expense of buying one. I'm not sure on price, but they are often advetised in the dog press.

My Lab. X was a terrible (and very loud barker when I got him) I filled a plastic bottle with some kibble and shook it at him every time he barked, it didn't take long to cure him, but you do need to be there with the dog most of the time, I have heard other people say spraying water at the dog also works -but my Lab X thought that was wonderful!

Good luck.

It did work for Sprout and now he just barks at normal doggie things (plus a few extra things :- " ) rather than barking all the time :)

I must stress again though that I'd NOT recommend this collar for a timid or scared dog.

And those other collars - well

I hired one of these collars for William it worked for 2 days but he liked the smell of all three types we could get

I also found that being so short coated (greyhound) when he shook he set the sensor of so he did not learn to associate the puff with the fact that he barked

I used one on Sid for a short period to stop him eating dead crabs and fish etc. on the beach :x which were upsetting his tummy. I would shout "leave it" and then squirt him and I am pleased to say after a very short period it worked. I think if you used it long term they would just get used to it and ignore it.
