My one Whippet has a thin coat and feels the cold, he has a coat on to go out but even in the house he feels the cold and the central heating is on  , he is only happy when the fire is on full blast and he is as near as possible. I am back to work next week so they will spend sometime in the kennel, they have a heater and lamp but I know he will feel any chill :( please help

You can get a kennel coat for him or if you have an old fleece you can make one yourself just trace the outline of a walking coat on to the fleece then cut it out and sew it up.

I bought a sweater from here for Coco and she has lived in it these past few very cold days because she is very vulnerable to the cold with her bad chest!

Togs For Dogs

I phoned my order through on a Tuesday and the sweater arrived on the following Saturday morning!

Alternatively I have order a fleece vest from this company for Aimee but it hasn't arrived as yet, will post pics as soon as it does

Some dogs PREFER to be outside.

I have 3 lurchers, and one of them gets too hot and clearly feels claustrophobic indoors, as we don't have space for an outdoors kennel and run I spend my days opening the garden door for her to get fresh air (by the way we hardly ever use central heating so she doesn't get too hot).

One of the other lurchers was born outside and lived outside until I got her, her mother and sister still live outside, and PREFER it - they ask to be let out in the evening so they can go to bed.

The third one also spends a lot of the day asking to go out- however cold it is.

What?????????????

What a strange thing to say as a first post.

Some of us crate our dogs inside the house when they are puppies so that it is easier to housebreak them and also so that the pup has somewhere to go that he/she feels safe and comfortable. :)

My dogs are all crated at night in our bedroom and as soon as they have had their last wee they hare into the house and run straight down to "bed" :D I would assume if the dogs did'nt like this set up they would'nt be sooooo keen to get in their crates :D

Other people keep their dogs outside in kennels for reasons like work etc I don't believe that we should condemn that person just becuse they do something that we might not do or agree with ourselves, everybody's circumstances are different and I know lots of people who have dogs that are kennelled and very happy with it

However all that said.........

Welcome to k9 Ridergirl

there are spme nice resnabel prised fleece coats on ebay there even a fella called dogleadman who does dog coats with legs in them to keep them realy warm. if you have a relative or nabout who can knitt they could make somthing for you

Excuse me rider girl my dogs are not in a CAGE they are in a kennel with heater, lamp, radio and an area where they can go outside for a wee if they wish they are walked before going in then they are walked at lunchtime. They live in the house most of the time and only go in it if they are going to be left for long periods, in fact they like it in the kennel and when I mention the den they can't wait to go in, they have access to water and can see what is going on in the garden more so than in the house.

You are welcome to your opinion but I know my Whippets are warm, well fed and above all HAPPY :D

We have cages for all our dogs and they are all kept in the house cages are a place where the dogs feel safe and secure this is there own space. We have a 7 week old pup who has a cage, we leave the door open when we are with him and unless he is playing HE PREFERS to be in his CAGE.

100% agree - I took the door off the crate as Alfie loves it in there so much we don't need to shut him in anymore! It's his space.

we purchased 2 fantastic knitted jumpers that Tallula puts her legs through - so they keep her whole front warm and we brought them a little bigger than her so that they covered her skinny behind!!

They came from a stand at the whippet racing in Detling - i think they were whippet rescue - fantastic colours and price.

If anyone knows how to get in touch with them we would love a few more for our girl xx

I think this comment is clearly uncalled for. Shane who posted initially obviously cares about his dogs or he wouldn't be asking where to get a nice coat to keep him warm!!

If only ALL owners were this caring?

A lot of people use kennels for different reasons ie: a lot of breeds much prefer to be outside, they are handy for seperating dogs & bitches when in season, they are a safe secure place to leave the dogs if you have to go out to work etc.

If they are decent kennels & heated in some way for the winter which this chaps obviously are they are better of in here, being able to have a wander about & go out & spend a penny than being confined to say one small room of a house.

I feel your opinion is a little bigoted especially as you clearly dont know the owner.

I dont know Shane either but his post says to me that he is a caring responsible owner who asked for a bit of advice & didn't deserve a comment such as this.

Good luck with the coat or fleece Shane, sure your little one will end up happy & snuggly.

I see there have been some helpful links for buying coats and I hope they work for your whippet.

You do not say how old his is... nor if he is in really good health.

SOMETIMES they can feel extra cold if their thyroid is not working properly.

You could have this checked out at the vet - by having a blood test taken.

Other signs of low thyroid output would include, coat thinning/balding, - there is an endless list...and I do not want to alarm you unduly, it is just a thought, because heat seeking is one of the prominent symptoms.

Years and years ago I bought some knitted jumpers from Whippet Rescue - they were wonderful, and I used them at night time for my elderly whippets - even though they sleep in the bedroom - hope you have some success.

My boys are only 4 and very healthy :) it's just that Smartie has a thin coat and even in the house sometimes feels a chill. :(

My Kylie is the same Shane she feels the clod easily and i will often find her asleep upstairs in our bed!! some will say that is wrong to letting a dog in your bed but just keep doing what works for you :- " Vicky on here sells indoor and outdoor coats too if you PM her.

Funnily enough i bought a knitted jumper for Lulu at Westhoughton track the other week, but there was none big enough for Woody, does anyone have JR Whippet rescue's number please for the merchandise bit, so i can get one for him many thanks :)

Have ordered one, the lady advertised on E-Bay, they are knitted and the money made goes to charity (Besenji's) not sure how to spell the name but it is a rescue charity. :)
