I should probably do a poll on this! I've got two whippies, a blue/white and a black. The blue/ white dog is a little shadow, always there when I move and quite clingy (whingey!). He's adorable but still very puppy like compared to his brother. The black dog is much more affectionate in a less needy way. He doesn't feel the need to follow me, is very laid back and content and gives the most enormous 'climb all over me' cuddles. He reaches up and just rests his head on my neck, loves to cuddle in bed and put his front legs on my shoulders like a cuddle. He is the top dog but I do think this is affection rather than him trying to be dominant over me as he does know his place and is obedient.

One of my friends has three greyhounds and her black one is the more affectionate of the three. At the RGT where I do volunteer walking, the black dogs seem more affectionate also. Has anyone else noticed this or have I only met affectionate black dogs?? I realise this is completely anecdotal and not at all based in science :b

I know people have dogs of all colours that are cuddly but wondered if anyone who has black dogs alongside other colours has noticed it.

I've heard anecdotal evidence that certain colours and markings are more prone to being lively/mischevious, but I'd say it just depends on the individual dog. Never had a black, but have heard that dark brindles and blues can be naughtier... :- Not sure about the affection side of things....

this is definatly true for Smokey,

he is the naughtiest whippet ever! but in such a cheeky way you just have to laugh! :sweating:

at the same time he is far more, excitedly affectionate than the girls, the girls have always loved a cuddle and will jump at you when you come in the door,

but smokey, her showers you in slobber, nibbles your ears and trys to pick your nose with his tounge :x when you try to cuddle him lol

and does a kind of flying karate kick thingy into your arms when you come in the door. :clown:

i do they are all just as affectionate as each other in there own way, but smokey just makes more of a song and dance about it (w00t)

I have a very special bond with Jinny, who is black, but it might come from her being my first whippet

She is very much my shadow and friend

The others are all very affectionate too so I don't think it is anything to do with colour, although Sox, my blue, is definitely a trouble-maker and the one who earns the most ASBOs in our house

A adore my black dogs, but i would say my cream Lurcher is just as affectionate..

I'm like this with Roscoe, my black dog, and again am not sure if it comes from the fact that originally we were going to only get one (Grover) but decided to get Roscoe as well when my son fell for him when were visiting Grover. So Rosoce is our 'added extra/ buy one get one free'! The idea that someone else could have had him is heartbreaking. :'( Grover is affectionate, too, will cuddle up and stuff, but doesn't seem to have the level of understanding that Ros has.

And Grover, the blue/ white, is a bugger, so the blue/ naughtiness link that people have mentioned is there also! He knows 'leave' and will leave stuff when you tell him but by God you have to catch him in the act because the minute he thinks I'm not looking = pounce. Remote controls, slippers, shoes, food, hats, gloves, socks, plant pots, yoghurt pots...nothing is safe!

Interesting to read the replies - thank-you!

My dark brindles are very offended, especially Naughty Jazzy!!

they did a scientific thing with cats a few years back on colours and temperament and it says black cats were the most affectionate but could be slightly shy creams/red were outgoing to the point of hissing and sticking up for themselves and tories were nutcases thats were the name naughty tortes came from tabby's seamed to be affected by there colours not there patter weather spotted or striped so black Tabby's followed back cats friendliness in general the more dilute the colour the more the trait altered so blues were friendly but even more timid than black and chocolates were one step away again the Orange/ red Gen was the strongest in character giving you the bold strong ginger toms and naughty tortes with the od ginger/red female being very very strong willed.

when i have looked at whippets and greyhound in general iv seen similarities to te cats colours but everyone as the exception to the rule. dont think its every been studded in dogs though

only have one, a stripey bum, so can't say, but I hate the way she snugs my OH more than me !!

just wanted to say your photos are gorgeous !!!!

I've noticed too. A friend just rescued a very timid black dachshund. He's very shy and looks very lonely when he first arrive but a week later he's mostly out of his shell mostly wants to be petted and cuddle.

A dachshund will spend all day demanding cuddles if you let ... trust me I speak from years of experience  It's bad enough now we are down to one dachsie boy but imagine back when we had four (w00t)

Re. the whippets colour/behaviour. My blue whippet was my first and is the most connected to me (practically telepathic), very affectionate, loves cuddles, but in the evenings tends to choose to curl up in a chair on his own, though he didn't when he was the only whippet. He is also the most wilful, though not the naughtiest. The two blacks, half-brothers, one 10 mths older than the other and now 18mths and 8mths in age, are more pushy in their demands for attention and will cuddle right up on the sofa at night ... but they are also more clingy and sometimes cry if left, particularly the pup. They are also naughtier if we are talking attempts to play tug of war with the cushions or raid the fridge ... but Finn is the one who occasionally chances his arm and doesn't come back straight away when called ... a different kind of naughty.

But there are so many variables besides colour here ... gender first and foremost ... if boys are generally more affectionate than girls then are black boys more affectionate than black girls. Family position as in who joined you first, but pack position too if you have a few. Individual temperament and life experience. Intelligence ... some are better at manipulating you than others. The list goes on. And this post is asking about all dogs but whippets are one of the most affectionate breeds so breed genetics is also in there.

Interesting debate though
