Hey just thought I would post a few pics of my whippet Ollie!

was just wondering as well what collars you all use for your whippets.....Ollie wears a normal leather whippet collar but get bald patches underneath it, can anyone recommend a better collar, i did buy him a martingale collar but it was really expensive and broke really quickly, and kept slipping so that it was too big.

thanks!

A good leather collar is hard to beat, especially if it tones in with the colour of the whippet, it is really nice for showing.

i use leather fishtail collars for all mine

not had any problems with them

Ollie is lovely

Mine all wear very lightweight rolled leather collars during the day with their name tags on when they're at home, fitted very loosely. I only put martingale collars on them when I take them out so any rubbing is kept to a minimum

My three dont wear collars in the house at all, just when we go out for walks......then Ive always had

good quality leather fishtail collars, which are lined inside...never had a problem with them rubbing, but they musnt be too loose on the neck.

Most of mine have leather martingales made by my saddler. The Nickel does discolour the fur on their necks a bit tho. Lilly has a standard fishtail whippet collar from http://www.collarsandleads.co.uk/Half-Chec...l-products.html this has a sheepskin lining. Lovely collars. I will use the company again as my saddler has moved away. Their collars are superb

I read up on this a while ago as my two get bald patches on their necks and I've tried all sorts of collars. Apparently some dogs (not just whippets) are prone to fragile hair which breaks really easily so it looks short and baldy. I suspect if your whippet is a bit of a puller on the lead like mine then this will happen. Am training mine to walk better on the lead and have bought soft lined martingales. The fur is growing back so I don't know whether it's walking nicely or the collars that have done the trick. :)) Eve's suggestion of a fur lined collar sounds fab - I'll get those next, I think.

BTW Mine don't wear collars in the house either so all the fur must be lost in the 2/3 hours we are out walking!

I used to cut up an old sheepskin coat sleeve and line the collars with them and double sided tape and did the trick but when in house i use the nylon adjustable clip collars as they sit nice at top of neck so dont get any rubbing on the front neck

I also found that the brass or nickel buckle caused a lot of rubbing and wearing away of the fur on front of neck

I think I will get one of the sheepskin lined collars, and Ollie does wear his collar all the time in the house so I will start taking it off when we're at home.

bit of loose lead training certainly wouldnt do any harm either lol!

:-D

K9 closet smoothie martingale collars. Saw Gracie's mum, Ruby, wearing one and thought they looked really comfortable so all mine have them. All different sizes, colours, with or without name embroidered on. Mine wear them all the time - even outside which I shouldn't let them as I don't want anyone knowing their names and being able to call them, and they never rub.

PS Love Ollie, what a cutie.

Ollie is a gorgeous boy  Not experienced any collar problems here, I mainly walk Penny in material collars (the non martingale kind) but also got a nice dark purple shaded leather one from exmoor lurcher its lovely and soft.

Mine have the fishtail collars and both seem fine without rubbing. Mine wear collars (with tags) 24/7 as I am far too paranoid to leave them off for any length of time, in particular with Pimms who can run off if the desire takes her. :sweating:

I just bought mine new collars from ebay, exmoor lurcher was the seller I think. They are suede lined, I wonder if that would help your problem...? They also do great colours, mine have pink and blue! ;)

Mine wear leather fishtail collars all the time for the same reason. They are suede lined and don't seem to rub.

I do like the pretty collars made with webbing/braid but Dolly rolls in fox poo :x so often I find leather collars are much easier to clean. They do have a couple of pretty collar/lead sets for special occasions.
