Hello everyone, just wondering what the best bedding would be for use in the bottom of a crate. It's for a pup that wont be house trained yet so something that is machine washable would be great!!

I've also been given a china "pig" to keep the pup warm, would the pup be comfy next to a big lump of china or do any of you use hot water bottles at night?

And finally :teehee: i've bought a adult sized crate, now the woman in the shop told me that it "would be ok for a pup, just put a small bed in one half & papers down in the other for the pup to go potty" Strange - I thought the whole point of the crate was to encourage the pup not to do the toilet in it's den? So what could I use to cordon off part of the crate to make it smaller for a whippypup?

Feeyew :p

 again, i'll have a little sit down

Hi

I use vetbed or Profleese as they are really hard wearing, easy to wash and dry really quick. And they are fluffy to so nice and comphy for a put to sleep on. I personally would give a puppy a teddy to sleep with not a china pig. I may be on the wrong wave lengh here but would that not be cold and hard.

Your puppy will have accidents in his cage so it is a good idea to paper half of it and make a sleeping area in the other half. He will learn not to mess in his sleeping bit bit he will have accidents and this cant be helped. As he gets older and have better control you can put the blanket down the full lengh of the cage.

I wouldnt use a hot water bottle incase he chews it. If he is in a warm room he should be ok and you could always put a cover over the cage to keep out the drafts.

I do not think that a puppy should be left in a cage at night when too young. They will use newspaper that you put by the backdoor when they are little. Using a crate will make your job much easier but you can‘t expect a little puppy to be dry overnight until around 12~16 weeks. I never crate at night until they can "last" while I am asleep, that way they don't see the crate as a toilet. Yuk

Can you make a little pen around the crate to put the paper in?

 It actually looks nothing like a pig so i don't know why it's called that, it's like a hot water bottle that seals but cannot be chewed etc, cause it's made of china. It's round or tubular, it was my gran's from when she bred dogs. It used to keep her litters warm & cosy (it doesn't look very cosy to me though!!) You'd have to wrap lots of bedding round it i suppose - i was just wondering if anyone else had used one. :teehee:

LOl I did wander. I had visions of a poor pup trying to cuddle up to a money box

We used vetbed and a fleece and also had an adult sized crate for our 7 week old. The crate was placed in an alcove in our hallway near the front door and across from the radiator so he was always snug. He has never soiled his crate. I just let him out every 3 hours which meant sleeping in the living room so I was near him. Unfortunately i always had to step out of the door first before he'd leave the warmth of his crate but once he did his business he would come straight back in. I'm not a pretty sight in the morning at the best of times and the milkman got a fright a few times as i staggered out tired and shivering in my boxers. He is now 12 weeks and can last until 5.30am before he whines to get outside. At this point, and I know I probably shouldn't I let him sleep on the bed until 7.30 when I get up.

I know all puppies are different - but my girls, Holly & Ruby were both clean and dry in the crate from day 1 at 8 weeks old. They went 7 hours over night and never cried at all to be let out. I think this may be because they were with other dogs so were happy to snuggle down for hours :)

Hi,

I use a "snugglesafe" heatpad with any of my animals that need a bit of extra warmth at night. They come with a washable fleece cover and are made especially for animal use. You just heat it up in the microwave for 5 mins or so and it stays warm all night!! BRILL.
