Hi all

To those who drive how do you travel with your dog in the car?

Ive had mixed advice on this some say the vest way is in a good crate and others say a dog harness\doggy seatbelt is best.

Currently Cody rides in the back attached to a sturdy dog harness for the car.

What are your thoughts on the best way to transport dogs in cars?

Car safe harnesses that are marketed as such often mean that they prevent the dog from becoming a missile in the event of a crash. One of the few that is crash tested to keep the dog safe is the Kurgo.

A dog could still be hurt quite badly in a crate, and the wire ones could also be crushed.

Kurgo is the one i have. So do you think its safer by harness over crate?

I just dont like the idea of putting him in a crate if someone crash's in the back of me ill be in panic if hes been crushed. I just dont trust crates.

Check your car's crumple zone to reassure you. But I use the Kurgo

I suppose it depends a lot of a dog. I would use harness if dog is willing and able to sit still in general. I have done that in past when my dog was sitting on seat like human being. But current ones are still too excitable that they would just get tangled and strangled with all the jumping about. Mine are safest and calmest when in cage that is fastened on the car.

Thanks for your advice, luckily Cody is calm in the car , sometimes a little to calm and ends up going asleep.

Im glad that so far there are others who use harness's as i wanted to just confirm it is safe to let them be on a harness instead of in a crate.

I use a harness, Folly is secured on the back seat, she settles well and often sleeps till the car stops. The crumple zones worry me about putting her in the rear, the luggage space is designed to crumple in the event of a crash and I do not want her being crumpled.

I have a custom-made marine ply crate with a wood and mesh front for loading. It is lined with a big duvet on top of a thick layer of newspaper. If I were to have another made, I would have another door at the side as once my boot lock jammed and it was tricky to get my dog out through the side door of the car with only the one door in the crate.

I’d say harness to be honest, the crate does seem strange but if as hemlock says it can be done in a diff design then fine , when I moved to Scotland my car was all duvets up so back seat for him was like a big protection bag, we can’t drive for others as we all ways have too nowadays so best pick the best device,

I have taken the seats out of my peuegot bipper so its like a van ...i have a soft dog guard up ....i dont drive too far with the dogs in the car ...we are lucky as the fields and woods are 4 min drive
When i have collected foster dogs i have used a harness seat belt for them ...
