Hi, this is a question for all you lurcher owners out there. Does a whippet/bed cross have the same temperament as a whippet? I have read that Bedlingtons can be snappy, aggressive and dominant; the opposite of whippets really, so I wondered what the mix is like.

my dad had a beddy x whippet for nearly 15 yrs , sadly we lost her to cancer a couple of months ago :(

she was the sweetest most mild mannerd girl you could ever wish to meet :huggles:

ive heard the same about beddies can be snappy and ive only had experience with the one but the experience we had was a wonderfull one :D

well i have told bruiser to cover his ears just in case he hears he is being described like this :( he is a show bred bedlington and im sure lots of ppl in the southwest have seen him patiently waiting on a table to be shown :- ") he is a brilliant handling dog ,my daughter came second with him at jha richmond he is constanly in the jha/ykc ring with all ages ,which i think attests to his temperament ,

as with a lot of terriers there are 2 types working lines and show lines ,yes the working lines are encouraged to be more aggresive, but most show dogs are bred for looks and good temperament, lol you cant have a snappy (w00t) dog in the show ring

from my limited experiance a liver colour bedlington seems to be snappy

and a blue and tan have a even softer temperament than the blue ,lol and bruiser carries the blue and tan jean

sorry i forgot to say bruiser is the father to the pups this lady is thinking about viweing, and i personally wouldnt offer a pup to a pet home if i had used a dog with a temperament as described by smallbear

Hi,

I have 1 of each. The beddie cross whippet is as soft as grease, both with people and other dogs.He is more headstrong than the whippet, probably the terrier in him.I love them both, the beddie cross is fearless, brave, and gives us so much laughs, whereas the whippet is a little shy, very sensitive, although very loving and devoted.

My Kelpie is a 9 month Whippet X Bedlington/Greyhound boy and already he has the potential to be the best dog I've ever had. So clever & trainable and a delight in the house - a wee thief but doesn't destroy the socks/hats/pants that he nicks. Loves everyone and every dog he's met (still a bit too enthusiastic with other dogs but not an aggressive bone in his body), not fussy about anything and just as happy in his crate or on someone's bed. He has a great retrieve although has a hard mouth so his retrieval dummies are a bit battered. He also has a very keen hunting instinct but his recall/leave is excellent so I trust him off the lead in familiar surroundings. I wish I could say his many positive traits and biddable nature were down to my training but I honestly think he's just one sweet and very smart pup.

Just thought I'd post a pic of the wee chap. We were up before the sun this morning. He's very whippet-like and not rough coated like some of his litter mates. Stands 21" TTS.

ive seen alot of bedlingtons around the show ring and they are all very sweet ive never seen them act aggressive they always seem a very affectionate breed.

Maybe the one you heard of had reasons for being aggressive it depends on how the puppies are breed, reared and of corse trained in your care. As long as the mother and father of your puppies are of sound temperment you shouldent have a promblem.

Good luck with what ever you decide

We have a full Bedlington called Rafferty who is a bit of a strange dog. He has a split personality & can be a right wimp one day( he'll hide behind a tree if another dog comes towards us) but the very next day the same dog could come past & he'd be all stroppy & growling at it

He tends to have a go at big dogs more than smaller ones. We think he's from working stock as he was a rescue probably left behind by travellers, mmmm, wonder why :- "

He doesn't really like going out for walks & if it's raining.....forget it.

He should really have been a cat as he is a real lap dog & loves cuddles.

He is definately top dog in the house & the other 2 (both lurcher bitches) do as he says but occasionally the youngest will challenge him. We think she is whippet/beddy cross so it may be a bit of the terrier personality coming out in her too.

Scrumpy is also a rescue so we're not 100% sure what cross she is but most people think whippet/beddy.

Rafferty will also make a bid to be top dog over us too from time to time & if he lived with someone who let him have his own way he'd be a right little sod. He will sometimes growl at me if I tell him to get off a chair or if he sees me with his grooming stuff. Twice he has tried to nip me as he didn't get his way over something. Despite looking all cute & fluffy he can be a  sometimes.

But we love him really

This all makes him sound terrible, he's not really, he only has his wicked moments every now & then. And he's not really as fat as this pic makes him look. He's got his winter coat on here (w00t)
