Izzy is 15 months old now and has just torn a cruciate ligament in a back leg whilst out walking :(

The vet has given me a weeks worth of tablets called "Norocarp" which contain 20mg carprofen. He told me to return in a week and she may need an operation.

I have looked back on threads but wondered if some of the experienced members on here could give me some advice please?

Should I let them operate if it's what they suggest next week? Will this always be a weak spot for Izzy now? He advised me not to walk her, but is there anything else I can do? She isn't in any pain and there is no swelling whatsoever.

I just want to do whats best for her and get her back to normal asap.

Many thanks, Ann.

Dolly tore her cruicate ligament about a month after we got her when she was 8 months old. She had the operation and her ligament was so torn that they totally replaced it with an artifical one. Her leg was was very swollen afterwards and she had to have cage rest for 6 weeks and then lead walking for another 4 weeks and gentle walking and then finally got the all clear for off the lead runs just over 1/12 months later. I also took her swimming which really helped the leg as with no exercise the muscle wasteage happened quite quickly. I also put her on Glucosamine and Chondrotin at the advice of some of the people on here. The vet told me she may be prone to arthtitis when she gets older. It has been a year now and honsetly you would never know that she had done it. She is fine and runs around like a crazy thing. I just took the exercise very slowly when it was allowed and i really thinik the swimming rehab really helped her!! She wasnt too keen at first. We actually put her in a rucksack about a week after her op and took her out for walks like that so she didn't get bored. She loved looking at everything and of course got a fuss from everyone. I wish you loads of luck as i know how hard it is. Please let me know what you decide and let me know hows it goes.

The tablets you have been given are anti-inflammatory pain killers...non steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs.

Inca had hers replaced with a false one too and she recovered very quickly and you wouldn't know she'd had a problem at all.

Every now and again, mostly in winter she can stiffen up a bit but that could do with her getting older too.

:luck: with her.

A friend's saluki did his in when very young. He was operated on, then slowly brought back to fitness. She went on to get him made up to a champion, including getting the dog cc at Crufts.

My greyhound fully recovered after she tore hers. she had an op 6 weeks bed rest and then it took her about 4 months on the lead to fully recover and was let off the lead fine ever since

My Billy had his cruciate ligament torn whilst out running in the park at 7 months. Had his operation (they took a bit of muscle from another part of his leg to repair it) hasnt looked back since! Bit difficult trying not to let him jump up on sofa and run up stairs but he was good as new in a very short time, cant remember how long as it was 10 years ago nearly!!! Crossed fingers he has not seemed to suffer since.

Many thanks for all this great help & support, I will see how she goes and what the vet suggests next Wednesday evening when we go back. I will post an update with what happens.

I like the rucksack idea, we were planning a trip to the coast this weekend and have put it off as we walk for miles on the beach... Will bear it in mind

Its so great to have this facility to ask questions from the Whippet community! :D

Just back from the vets, fantastic news he is amazed at Izzy's recovery! Princess pampering treatment is obviously the way to go :)

He gave me 2 more weeks of the anti inflamatories and told us to keep her resting the same and he thinks she should be OK. What a relief :sweating:

She has so much pent up energy, she desperately wants to play :( Bless her.

Thats good news ........My old girl snapped all of her back leg ligaments .........Shes fine now, but I did put her on glucosamine to help her repair  ...... :luck:

:luck: Great news. Good luck Annie G and Izzy Whizz for a full recovery :huggles:

Glad she is doing so well!! I know how you feel they are like coiled springs when they are not allowed to run!!

Don't forget that the NSAIDS are probably masking the pain so giving a false impression of how she really is, as well as helping to heal the ligament. I would definitely give her Glucosamine now and probably forever. It has a build-up effect so takes 4 - 6 weeks before it kicks in and will not harm in the long term. I have several of my Whippies on it permanently who have had soft tissue injuries in the past.

Thank you for this, I asked Strike how much I should give her and I will buy some tomorrow...

I so  love her and just want to make things right for her.

Izzy is doing great. :D

I bought some glucosamine tablets and would like advice on how to make her take them please

They are the size of a smartie sweet!! I am trying to disguise them in bits of cheese or chicken, they are so big though she sometimes spots them!

Any tips?

At first i made it so they seemed like a treat and got them both to sit and then gave it to them and they just ate them. Nows its a ritual they hear the pill jar and know its dinner time. I just pop one on their dinner and they eat it no probs!! My other dog hated tablets so i would put it in a bit of bread and again pretend it was a treat and she would hoover it down. Good luck with her. The tablets have done really well with Dolly. I hope izzy has a good recovery.

Hi

Sorry to hear about the injury, but if this helps my Basset Hound had the same injury at 8 months, being a heavy breed of dog, we thought she might have to be operated on, thankfully this was not the case, after seeking advice we took her to a Canine Hydrotherepy pool instead, this coupled with cage rest did the job, the Vet did not want to give her Painkillers, he thought that if she could not feel a slight discomfort she may try and use her leg

Betty went on to win the Bitch cc at Crufts 3 years on the trot, and equalled the Bitch CC Record,

Dont get dishearted

I have managed, by acting like an idiot getting all excited, to convince Izzy the tablets are treats!

Get her excited and she just eats them, phew. She is doing great with her leg, full of coiled spring energy though.

 Thank you.

Update on the latest vet trip tonight ... they are very pleased with Izzy :D

Hopefully no op needed, we go back in another month and wean her off the anti inflammatory tablets during that time. Said will be another couple of months yet until she is able to use the leg properly and it will have healed.

Told us to walk her now on the lead carefully, great news as we are all going stir crazy.

She is being such a good girl eating her glucosamine "treats" without a fuss.
