I know what you mean Kris, my Dad's 2 dogs coursed our Bonnie when she was a pup,she initialy ran, when they got her cornered and started to go in for the kill, she gave a good count of herself.Luckily, it only lasted seconds,my dad pulled his 2 off,he was really shook up though, and shocked.

She doesn't ever start anything, but if she's picked on,she comes out fighting.

The thing I find hard,is her constantly bashing herself. She is calmer after a good walk, but you know she's around, she would bomb, with out stopping if you let her,for over 8 hrs, as a 9 week old pup.she didn't crash then,I eventually caged her,so I could get some peace.

As a pup, I did cage her, after a play,'cos she had duracell batteries inside, and went on,and on, and on.

I'm hoping to mate her this year Vicky, she was a year old in January, and it was suggested to me,to mate her at her next season.I personally think that is too young, but am thinking of trying the season after.Although I will discuss it with Brenda first,to see what she recomends.

Any help with age for mating Kris ?

I know what you mean about size Chris, some pups at six months are twice the size of Bonnie  .

Aren't they supposed to be able to work rats in enclosed spaces!!!!

I've got loads of pics, just can't downsize them.Bj or Alfyn always downsize mine for me, to post on K9.

last time i saw some at shows i was disgusted at the size they were making,i thought these arent mannies theyre mini dobermanns!i used to mate my bitches at their 3rd season or between 18 months an 2 years of age.maybe having a litter might calm her down but i doubt it!lol!we had a loopy male who used to like raiding the bin.so one day hubby put him in the bin an put the lid on.10 mins later we went in garden an lifted the lid up an guess what?dog was sat there quite happily sitting in the bin,not a bit bothered!little git! :D

Lyd.

When hubby and I were watching Crufts, he saw an MT and said "Wow, what is that dog, it's lovely!"Having met your Bonnie, I was able to tell him. He was very impressed. We used to own a Dobe before Archie, and the colouring is very similar. I think that is what caught his eye. I must admit, before I saw yours, I wouldn't have had a clue what the breed was. It is not a dog you see around and about. Having read this, I now realise why. What a shame, and I hope the numbers increase.

Have you tried the photo resizer free software? It works a treat

Photo Resizer

:( Thanks LV, I think that is the one I've got.Tried, and I don't know where it put the pics, searching in my comp doesn't find them, just the originals that are still too big.

Thanks Kris about the breeding,if she goes 6 monthly, her 3 rd season will be when she is 18 mths - 2 yrs.

At shows I've kept an eye on the M.T. dogs,I've seen 2 that are not huge, who may be good dogs to put Bonster to,if the dogs owner agrees.

There is one with a superb temperment, that I really like,he's friendly to other males and other breeds of dog.Unfortunately,he is a big lad,I think the owner mentioned 21 ",she doesn't show him.

well i wouldnt worry too much about his size if his breeding behind him is of the right size.you can use a standard sized dog an hes from oversized breeding an you could get tall pups.i tend to go on the parents an g/parents more.do you still get some being shown that have bald ears an thighs?i know a good cure for that.when dorothy norman sent rudi to me to be used at stud on whitgift wheatear,he was a kennel dog an was virtually bald everywhere except his back.i coated him in liverine unction every day an when he went home dorothy rang me an said rudis got coat how have you managed that,so i told her.oh i remembered the other ch out of purdey (ch geifang geminesse)it was ch.antaeus amazone

Bonnie is very...bonnie Lydia :D

MT's and Pharoh hounds were the other breeds that really caught my eye from Crufts (highlights on TV)

Kris, what is Liverine Unction,Bonster gets baldy throat and has started to go a little thin haired on the base of her ears.I have been applying Cornucrescine to her. With good results so far, except I forget to put it on as frequently as I should.... .

Never heard of Liverine Unction before,or seen it for sale.

Joanna, Dobes were first created by crossing Greyhounds with Manchester's,and possibly something else. Herr Dobermann,or whatever the blokes name is, did a good job IMO. I like Dobes as well.

Have you got a pick of your Dobe you could post? A friend of mine has a huge Dobe dog. He's also as loopy as Bonster, love him too bits,if my house was bigger I would have nicked him by now.

kris, you should definitely start keeping/breeding M.T.'s again. There are still some very nice correct sized ones about. You must miss them loads, 'cos you're house will be far too quiet now :( .

I even think that if anything happened to Bonster,my whippies would miss her loads. She was a shock to their systems to start with, but they  her now.

Rae, Bonnie was even bonnier before.I put her on a diet, then I went to an open show, and out of about 6 M.T.'s,she was the thinnest  .

So I then relaxed her diet slightly for Crufts,so she wouldn't look skinny :) .

I'm glad you think she's bonnie though. When I was with the M.T. peeps at that open show,I admitted she'd been dieting.I promised I wouldn't compare her to my whippies :- " ,it's hard though when most of the time I'm not seeing other M.T.'s.

Bonster is no help either. She loves her food, the most in the whole wide world,so if I let her,she just pigs and pigs and pigs. I think her little tummy could burst from pigging.

She is a lot of fun,and I'm really glad we've got her.

I also like the Pharoah Hound that got B.O.B.,and was shown in the group.

Did you know, there is a smaller, identical looking breed called Cirneco del Etna.

They are a bit smaller than a whippet, and I think developed for rabbiting around Mt. Etna.I've no idea how much one would cost, but they look lovely. They are probably, still registered with the K.C. on their import register. If I spot any,at shows,I'll ask if I can take a pic and post it on K.9 for you.

hi lydia, liverine unction is a pink ointment, looks a bit like germoline.if you cant get it at your local pet shop, you should be able to get it at the ch shows on a trade stand.theres a pet trade warehouse just up the road from me an i think they sell it.i really miss having a mannie about,so does daughter jacqui, she has whippets, they are a lovely breed.i lost my last dobermann 12 months ago an just have the shiba inus now,and they are getting on! :D

Thanks for the info on the liverine unction, I'll look out for it.Also your comments on breeding.I've got a feeling that the large M.T. with the superb temperment has got large parents and grand parents ;) .

Luckily, when it comes to finding a stud dog,I'm sure that Bonsters breeder, and Margaret and Anthony will help. They will remember what the parents and grandparents were like :) .

Sorry about your Dobe,I had a few oldies,so we had the heartache of losing them one by one over the last few years :( .We've still got Tubbs, who if he makes it to his birthday in May,will be 18 yrs old.

Whippies are a lovely breed, very adorable :huggles: ,but, M.T.'s have such a sunny, happy idea of life, they really do brighten the place up (w00t) .Wouldn't be with either now  .

At the mo,all my whips are asleep.Bonster has just gone into the garden to do a patrol, now she's lying down destroying a bone.Whilst planning her next move...... :- "

i remember margarets first dog cap.(captain from churnet)he was a lovely dog.i still remember some of the mannies from the 70s,ive not been to a show in years,so id no idea whos still breeding an showing,so i had a look at some of the results at crufts,an some of them are still around, arent computers wonderful.it enables you to keep track of things you wouldnt normally be able to!i thought your little girl looked lovely in the photos at crufts, shes a nice shape an size.well done for getting a 3rd with her! :D

Thanks Kris, I am really pleased with her.Margaret has been very helpful,as have lots of M.T. exhibitors.

Looking forward to finding her a husband as well.Although her chat up lines are dreadful..... ,as is her flirting technique.......

So with there being so few do they tend to be quite closely bred or do breeders go out of this country for fresh stock?
Oooooh very interested now, was only talking about mt's tonight with my grandad about the lack of them!

edited to change my naff spelling
Hmm, I'm actually very new in M.T.'s Vicky.Depending on who you speak to,would make a big difference on the reply.

The next is what I've been told,I haven't yet formed my own opinion, but suspect that this is true.

The majority are very closely bred, soon, there is going to be trouble with the gene pool.Apparently, peeps in Manchesters use the current winner over and over again.

Ella Eva,reckons mine is the only young M.T. who is the correct height being shown.Brenda and Margaret have tried to outcross more than some in the breed.Sometimes,a dog/bitch is exported,so there are some new lines coming in.

Bonster resembles the M.T. bitches who are shown in the open classes, and veteran classes, more than the ones in her age group.

When I contacted the M.T. puppy list person for one,I was told there was at least a 2 year wait for a bitch pup. This was about Oct. 2002.

At a Champ show, L.K.A. 2002,I spent the day with the M.T. people, and was given Brenda's phone no by Margaret.

These lines were recomended to me,by the B.M.T.C.'s secretary,as having excellent temperments.

When I contacted Brenda, she was expecting a litter in Jan.I was 3rd in line for a bitch pup.

Bonnie's mum only had 1 bitch pup, when Brenda rang to tell me,I was gutted. Then she said,I sounded like the best home,so if I was still interested, and wanted to come and see her,do.If you like her,you can have her.

Well when we went to see her,she was identical to her bruv's apart from being a wee bit smaller, slightly more feminine. We liked all of them, but her bruv's were really feisty.Well, we got her and I love her to bits.

She's feisty enough to defend me,but very loving, affectionate and friendly. Not all M.T.'s are as friendly as her,but the majority are.

In all seriousness,if you did want one,and didn't fancy one from Bonster,or the wait,I could put you in touch with some of the peeps who are breeding this year.

Hello Lyd,

This is Susie and Chris from Northampton.

We are looking into aquiring our first puppy, and believe that the MT is the breed for us. We understand that there are long waiting lists for puppies, but are also very concerned about the obvious inter-breeding that his going on to keep the breed from extinction.

Internet info on the breed is in scare supply, and I happened upon this K9 conversation from March 2004 through doing a seach on Eaglespur Kennels. Funny enough, your comments did not flag up under a search for Manchester Terrier!

I do not even know if you are still using this website, but I thought I would drop you a note on the off chance.

1. Do you know anyone that is planning a litter either this year or in 2007?

2. 2 years on from your original update, do you have any more information about the issues regarding the gene pool and genetic/hereditary issue?

Thank you for your time.
