Some of the racing sledge dogs are now Husky, Greyhound and/or Saluki type crosses ........They have an actual name that I can't remember :b , but its to give them the speed and all of that stamina :D ........I know that the Husky racers in America are devided on which types best, but for a working dog I'd imagine that would be one VERY good cross :)

Sorry I thought you were joking fra I didnt realise it was actually a serious cross  I was just thinking of the size difference between a male husky and a female greyhound height wise :sweating:

hello lesley i was thinking what would make a good working lurcher. ferreting/lamping/coursing. husky for stamina and greyhound for speed.

arnt there enough dogs to cross with running dogs without adding to the mix? If you cant find a suitable one with whats available, then keep budgies instead! :clown:

I dont think a budgie would do the job. Sounds like an interesting mix, Fra. I'd love to see a photo of such a dog. Interesting.

From what I have read about huskies and allied breeds they are serious stock worriers in general and very hard to obedience train hardly what you would want in a working lurcher I feel

I do like huskys, but not crossed with a greyhound to make a lurcher! Apparently huskys are no good off lead and i no from experience that they are noisy when running, a total fault in a lurcher. ;)

i have read of aguy that is putting husky in his mix,i cant rember the name of the guy but he "claims" to have a pure breed lurcher from years back!somthing like the smith field or sumit.he's written lots in earth dog site i think it was.

if no one tried new things then we wouldnt have the crosses we have now so why not try new stuff.

its all well and good saying why not try new stuff, but what happens to the resulting pups? the tried and tested crosses are so available because they have proved themselves at what they were bred for. if you made this cross, and it didnt work out, its not like a recipe you can just throw out. these pups, who could range from just being unsuitable all the way to being actually dangerous, what do you do with them? having husky in them, i'd class them as being a specialist breed, so new owners will have problems from the start. then, they might workout, but what of the next generation? god only knows which side will breed true, what characteristics will emerge. huskies have so much wolf in them, and wolves often, when hunting, go for the sick, or weak, or young (the vulnerable members) of a herd. so you take this long buried instinct, and breed into it an extremely high prey drive. huskies have stamina, sighthounds speed. so should the hidden trait come out again, you'd have an animal that is going to get you, that you couldnt outrun on either long or short distance :sweating:

How can there be a pure bred lurcher?! A husky has never been used for hunting as far as i know. I have never known a husky being used to catch rabbits. Rediculous cross imop. We don't need any new breedings, so many people 'try' to make new x's and look what happens to them, they end up in rescue because they weren't any good. :(

this is true but you would hope that people would only breed if they could get homes for the dogs or keep them for them selfs(i know this wont happen )or not do it.

as i said he "claims" to of breed them,i think he wanted the stamina or somthing it was a long time ago i read it.

I think you are on about the "Tumbler" having husky in it`s make-up but I don`t know to much about the type so cannot really comment further other than to say it is a cross that I personally would steer well clear of and cannot see the point of the cross in the first placve as there are other more suitable breeds that can add whatever you are trying to add with the husky cross.

ILL STICK TO RACING DOGS YOU STICK TO YOUR CIDER! CLOWN! :clown:

The tumbler? that's an interesting name!

I completely agree about the shame of dogs ending up in rescue. It is unbearable to see the amount of greyhounds needing homes. There are always a lot of lurchers too, and tons of staffies, arent there. you tend to see the same breeds coming up again and again.

Just too add. If someone is thinking of crossing a husky and greyhound together to make a dog with speed and stamina, theres no point, as thats why collies are crossed with greyhounds!

If i wanted to make a new lurcher with speed and stamina, the husky wouldn't even come on my list! I would use a pointer, weimaraner that sort of thing, BUT there is no need to as already stated.

tumbler yeah thats it. i've always thouht a german pointer would work well crossed with a greyhound but hat is based on the shape really, iwould guess they would be faster than a lab cross.
