Roscoe managed to injure his foot on Sunday while free running for only about the fourth time. It's either a small cut between his toes or a nail bed injury - in order to see which I'd have to pull his toes apart slightly and I don't want to hurt him or make it worse. It bled for a bit (not profusely) and by the time we'd driven home (10 mins) he'd licked it clean and wasn't limping. I tried to clean it up with warm water but he didn't really want me to so I left it and it dried up quickly and he had no problems. Yesterday we went for a short walk and he was fine - couldn't even see where it had bled from so we thought it was ok. Today he was running about in the garden chasing Grover and has done the same thing again - re-opened the cut. However, this time, after a sleep, he woke up and was putting his foot down very gingerly. He's also been crying but that could be his teeth (he's also lost two baby canines today).

Should I try to clean it up or let him do it? Would you go to a vet with this or should I just keep him from running for a few days and see how he goes? Anything I can do to help him? Given where it is I doubt the cut can be more than half a centimetre long if that as there's no sign of it from the top or bottom of his foot - it's not his pads, I think it looked worse because of his toes rubbing the cut when he walked.

Any advice welcome.

The pic shows it when he opened it again today - it didn't bleed any more than this.

Hi.

Sorry to hear about Roscoe.

Have you heard of Thornit, I hadn't until a friend of mine gave me some to heal a crack on one of mines paw. Whether this will help it is worth a try.

Put some in a plastic bag and put his paw in it and shake as much of the thornit onto the cut as you can, do it often.

Hope this is of help.

Awww, poor Ros :(

Sterile saline solution to bathe, let it dry and then something like Intra-site Gel to assist the healing process.

I'd keep him under control for a few days too, to minimise the chance of it opening again. It's in an awkward place and the pain level would be similar to you tearing a cuticle ....... ouch!!!!

Good luck with the little lad :luck:

Eskil had managed to injure the bits between his toes on snow/ice. I cleaned them and didn't let him off lead until it healed. all is well now :) get well soon Roscoe :luck:

I would just keep it clean , keep him on the lead till it heals and check it daily to make sure it is not becoming infected :)

Thesoak in salt water (6 teaspoons salt to one pint water) for 5mins three times a day is the classic remedy for cut anything but if he has split the web (the thin skin between the toes) that is very bad news because it will take a loooo-ooong time to heal (e.g. 6 weeks) and if you let him off the lead too quickly, it will split open again and you will be back to square one.

Hi, sorry to bring up an old(ish) thread. But one of our boys has done something quite similar today. It must have been out in the back garden while he was out playing with our new pup. The cut seems to start in the same place as in the photo by the original poster but it looks as though it goes right between the two toes and down onto his pad. It looks like it had stopped bleeding by the time we found it but upon cleaning it, the wound was re-opened slightly. He alternates between walking normally and on just 3 legs now. We have put the blue anti-bacterial spray on it to see if it helps.

My wife thinks he should be ok, but I am a little concerned as he's 'my little man' lol. Is it anything to worry about or will it heal in time? Thanks for reading through this loooooong post :)

No post is too oldish and no post is too long IMO

I'm one for running off to the vet with the littlest of things

Nockie got a puncture wound the other day and was walking around on three legs so as per usual I took her to the vet. I was probably overreacting but the vet gave a Tetanus, antibiotic and a pain killer jab and was laughing all the way to the bank. But at least my mind was at rest and Nockie had no infection and no problems after a day or two. :D

Just an update and to reassure Peirce! Roscoe has hobbled on and off for a couple of days but the cut has not reopened even when my daft son let him out in the garden off lead and he went running round after Grover  . When he wakes up his leg seems stiff but I think he just sleeps awkwardly. For 95% of the time you wouldn't think he had anything wrong with him. He has managed to cadge a lift upstairs for the last two nights after looking pitiful at the bottom of the stairs - funny how he can still jump on the bed when he gets up there, though, cheeky bugger! :p Have checked and no sign of infection, touch wood. We went for a little walk today and he was fine and dandy so I'm still taking him to obedience training tonight. On closer inspection it looks like a combo nail bed injury (some dried blood around the base of his nail) and a small nick down the side of his toe.

Thanks for your replies. I've been at work all day so haven't actualy seen him since last night. But my wife reassures me that he is 'running around like an idiot again'. :)

it's just to make you feel guilty and pamper them even more :p more cuddles more treats more cuddles :) :) :)
