I have heard taping a hair-roller-curler thing to the injured part can protect it, so that it can heal...you have to have it on there for a while though, to really give it chance to heal...one of these...

Have this Problem with mine and its so awkward to treat. Have one dog that has had this periodically for years. Hers is right at the end too. We have done several things over the years but its time consuming they dont seem to want to heal very quickly and boy when they bleed its like a pump and sprays out everywhere.

I hope this may help but as I said its not easy.

We did initiallythe first time, years ago, go to the vets, who cleaned and just bandaged it and then we had to keep going back for checkups and rebandage. They said amputation of the tip was possible but it could happen again further up so we gave that idea up. Then someone told us to put a womens open plastic hair roller over the tail and hold on with tape right up the tail and allow the air get to it. I think you will find this tip also in Jackie Drakefords book of the working lurcher. The trouble again is it doesnt always want to stay on, one swipe or a chew and thats a no no.

The one that we have had the most success with, courtesy of a Greyhound Trainer, who are well use to this sort of thing happening, is to bathe and use light gauze bandage, (stretchy one the best) cheapest wilkos if you have one, and just keep checking. Once the wound has started to heal, leave it open to the air whenever possible, If the cut isnt too big, surgical spirit can be used to harden up but must be very careful with it. Its all rather stage by stage Im afraid. Once the skin is harder, then Aloe vera gel, to stop it being itchy, (tube from Holland and Barrett, cost 1-99

and we have worked wonders with our dog but its taken about 2 weeks in all to get it to that stage. No doubt the little monkey will do it again but we are keeping a close eye on her right now. Sorry its longwinded but Im afraid these tail things are.

the hair curler seems like a good idea the wound will still get to breath letting it heal but will not get disturbed..
