My OH was telling me last night of a guy who works with him, who has just bought a Dalmation pup for £500....

But the pup is only 5 weeks old and they are going away in two weeks time for two weeks and will have to board the pup until they get back...

He is having problems with the pup staying up all night crying, but when it does he gets up and plays with it...

He said he got the pup because the kids wanted it, OH said he doesnt think he is a dog person ie he just thought he could buy it and that was it....

I guess what im asking is at 5 weeks old shouldnt the pup still be with his mum or is it normal for pups to be homed so young?? Even kittens wait till they are 8 weeks old

Doesnt it make you mad when you hear these stories   Bloke without a clue buys a dog for his kids and whoever bred it let it go at five weeks with obviously no consideration for its future welfare. Somewhere down the line when the noveltys worn off this guy will likey have a confused 'problem' dog and will be probably be wondering why!

I was going to offer to have it while he went away instead of putting it in kennels, poor little thing will be so scared.... :(

At 5 weeks old it should still be with it's mum for another 3 weeks.

at 5 weeks it still needs it mum and litter mates both mentaly & physicly for play/food ect.

Good point forgot about that...i wonder what he will do then??

I said to OH, why didnt he leave it with the breeder until after his trip, but by the sounds of it its not that kind of breeder :(

Oh dear that sounds bad. It would be very kind of you to take it on when they were on holiday, but wouldn't it be absolutely horrible having to give it back?

poor puppy, should still be with its doggy family its not ready to be alone :(

Poor little thing should still be with mum.... why do these sort of people bother breeding if they just want to get rid at such an age?.... stupid question really as i know the answer but it makes my blood boil...

Its very nice of you to take it in while they're on holiday but if it was me i dont think i'd be able to give it back afterwards...

This is terrible  poor puppy and mum too :( who on earth in their right mind would let puppies go that early

A colleague of mine has got a dalmation. They bought it for their daughter following the 101 Dalmation craze. (like a lot of other people). He now seriously does not recommend Dalmations to the unexperienced owner. They are a hell of a lot of work, very highly strung and need loads of exercise. I believe this is standard behaviour for them as they were bred to run along side carriages and don't appreciate sedentary lifestyles.

just had lunch with OH and he said the pup has been to the vets but they didnt say anything...

The guy is getting the jabs done soon as possible, ready for their trip away..

And these are the kind of people who go away in B&B's and hotels every weekend or so?? well they are always going away

The earliest our vet will do innoculations is 8 weeks, if he has the pup done so young can it do it any harm?

my vet also says 8wks is best although the first one can be done earlier....but the second one shouldnt be done before 12 weeks and then they are not safe until 10 days later so i hope he isnt expecting it to go in kennels too soon!

Id say that the breeder is far from responsible for letting a pup that young go to its new home. I wouldnt consider taking a pup unless it was at least 8 weeks old.

Dalmations were bred to run under coaches for protection, they can go all day and are definatly not dogs for people who do not have the time to take them out for a good few hours.

I can't imagine they will keep him for long before he's in a rehoming centre.

i wish people would think before they buy

I didnt know dalmations needed so much exercise, but if i was going to get one i would because i would have read up on it....

i cant understand why they thought 5 weeks old was ok  then 4 weeks from buying it they want to put it in kennels, he will be 9 weeks old, hardly enough time to settle in at all

Have told OH to direct him onto here for advice, but he wont, he said he has friends who can help him out and know more about dogs than i do  not about me its about that poor pup :(

i despair when i read stuff like this. :( the vet cant vaccinate the last injection before 12 weeks cos it wont take.there has to be 4 weeks between these jabs and theres a reason for it.why didnt he get a stuffed toy dalmation instead?

I used to walk a dalmation who was 2 yrs old at the time and he was extremely highly strung, he was very dominant and was prone to nipping and jumpimg up at every chance he got and all because the owners had no idea what so ever of how to train and exersise him.

He only went out into the garden during the week, apart from the hour and half I had him. He also had a run with his dad on Saturdays when he went for a jog...and dalmations need so much more exersise.

They also let him completely rule the house and he was manic.

These people need to take advice very soon if they are to have a happy healthy dally.
