Beau is terrified of fireworks and we have been using Skullcap and Valerian for the past few years. It is great and works fine but does not really allow for the unexpected bursts of fireworks. I had thought of using the Dap diffuser but this confines you to one room and as Beau likes to follow me around this would not really work. I decided to try using a Dap collar which looks very much like a flea collar but is impregnated with phenomes (sp) which rely on the dogs body heat to be released. Beau has been wearing his collar now for three days, whilst out tonight there were several burst of fireworks and bangs to which he gave no response and was quite happy to continue with his walk. Normally the fireworks would have made him bark/howl and turn around to go back home.

I think this is a sucess. For those of you who experience similar problems I have put a link for Vet UK. I find this company competative in price and I also received free next day delivery.

I bought a DAP spray for Jinny a while ago. Recently I've been spraying the car crate bedding and then sitting in the car with Jinny and Ella - not got round to driving yet!

Ella crashes out immediately in the crate - but she doesn't have a travel problem anyway :)

Jinny moves around the car for a while, looking a little worried, and then curls up on the front seat next to me and goes to sleep (w00t)

I'm hoping that this approach with the DAP spray will sort out her fear of the car

Thanks for that link- I've just ordered a collar for my poor Alfie, who is terrified of fireworks, and they've started already round here

Hope it helps...

The fireworks are going off now and have been for 2 weeks :( , Ive just let Robbie in from the doggy garden and he's shaking/panting, but a bit calmer now :)

Robbie has to be sedated as his fear is very bad, tried the cd, from a k9 member, it did not work, tried the plug in dab diffuser (sp) it did not work :(

Im now going to buy a collar for next year as I dont like to see Robbie so out of it, but last year he was so sedated I was worried he would die :( I kept phoning the vet asking if he was okay :( I think I was driving the vet round the bend with my calls :- " , but I dont like to see a dog doped up :(

This year will be worse as we will have firewoks from the Saturday right till the monday(5th), so I will need to sedate Robbie for 3 night :( Very wrong, BAN THEM

I have to sedate Alfie on the worst nights, trouble is, you never know when that will be until the fireworks start, then it's too late to sedate him

Which sedative does your vet prescribe? I found that ACP makes Alfie very dopey and staggery, I really don't like what it does to him :( But Valium just makes him very sleepy, he dozes all through the fireworks and doesn't even seem to notice them

I agree with you though...BAN THEM!!

It's not too late to try a collar for this year. Beau has only been wearing his for three days. Last night we had a major firework display and he was perfectly happy curled up. None of the usual noise or shaking that he normally displays.

Post edited to say I agree about banning them!

never seen her so frightened before, couldnt get her outside again!!! (good job it happened after we got back from being out for dinner) she was unsettled for the rest of the evening :(

have had a look at that link, still not sure what would be best, will have another look.

why the hell do people have to have fireworks for weeks before and weeks after the 5th................really p***** me off..........keeps my little boy awake as well, he doesnt like them either

Susan, what are you using? Chelsea is on Xanax, and it's wonderful. We have a range of tablets that we can give depending on how stressed she is, and the only time she seems really doped is on the highest dose, so we don't give that. It has been a lifesaver.

The dap diffuser works for her, but only takes the edge off. Over the years she has gotten worse, so we finally resorted to medication, and the Xanax is a lifesaver. Often vets will prescribe acepromazine which is not actually good for sighthounds and isn't absorbed properly as they don't have the body fat to do so. Your description makes me wonder if that's what you had been prescribed.

Bobby now aged nearly 9 (not a whippet) really has a terrible time with fireworks, gunshot and any similar sound. We have tried everything. I had the CD and sent it to Susan as it didn't work at all with Bobby - sorry to hear it didn't work with Robbie either. :(

Wendy, I haven't heard of Xanax, so maybe we will try that this year. Do you get it from the Vet or Chemist?

You need to have it prescribed from your vet. The nice thing about it is it acts relatively quickly.

Liz (alfie) ACP is the acepromazine that I was talkign about - I must have missed your post the first time round. Check wtih your vets about Xanax. Honestly it does the trick, but she still has her faculties and she is MUCH happier. Right now Chelsea is on 2 tablets 2x a day, for the next couple of weeks. On the really bad nights (like next weekend) she'll be on 3 tabs 2x a day, and we CAN go to four, but I'd rather not because that's when she was dopey, but if she needs them we do.

Thanks Wendy, I will speak to my vet tomorrow
