Lurcher_Jazz.jpgJazz, my rescued lurcher bitch was found abandoned so her history is unknown. She is about 6 years old and has a typical gentle, friendly, lazy lurcher temperament. House-trained, doesn't worry sheep and well-behaved on the lead. For the past 9 months I walked her in our Somerset countryside off the lead. She often disappeared across country but eventually returned to my whistles. However, due to various indications and my witnessing a kill I realized she has been doing an efficient job of culling the local roe deer population.

Has any member had the same experience and what did they do about it.

A difficult one I'm afraid. Two of my three rescue lurchers would definitely chase deer given the chance - the other one I have finally got to the point where I can call him off the chase, but it's taken a long time and a LOT of training to get there. I only let mine offlead in safe areas where I'm reasonably sure there will be no deer around.

What a lovely looking girl she is

Thank you FeeFee for your comment. I am trying to re-train Jazz to stay close-by off the lead with moderate success so far. She adores Pedigree Schmackos so I will use these as a reward everytime she resists the temptation to dart through a hedge and return at my command. The problem is I am 79 years old and full-time carer of my wife so I can't get the miles in that Jazz can do on her own if I keep her on the lead. I can't find a muzzle that I am confident to let her run free with. None of the muzzle contacts on the internet seem to cater for this situation.
