Wimbledon Stadium demo

This Saturday, February 10th, 6 - 7.30pm

London Greyhound Action will be staging a demonstration outside Wimbledon Stadium, from 6.00pm to 7.30pm this Saturday, February 10th.

The demo coincides with a greyhound race meeting taking place at the stadium and the aim is to educate people going in not to support greyhound racing.

Please do your best to attend, especially if you live in or near the London area, and do bring anti greyhound racing banners and placards, if you can.

Directions:

Rail & Tube: Tooting Broadway (Northern line), Haydons Road (Thameslink), Wimbledon (District line) or Earlsfield (from Waterloo).

Bus: Bus routes 44, 77, 156 pass the junction at the top of Alexandra Road. The stadium is a short walk from the stop.

Car: A219 turn left off the Alexandra Road into Plough lane via traffic lights. Stadium is on the left.

As a race supporter at wimbledon i'd like to see some1 try to educate me... i will be attending the don tomorrow as i have a runner...
 
Instead of trying to "educate" the majority of people on here(who like to see dogs run) why don't you let us educate you instead.

they'd be better of getting a life, take it there will be the normal quota of old people and students rolled out for the protest, funny what a packed lunch and a bottle of stout will do LOL>
 
Its sad .......These people never see the excitement in the dogs .....They LOVE racing ......In the morning when they have their racing breakfast, then their race lunch they know they are racing ......The excitement of getting into the van etc .....The vet check, weighing in etc ......all of the time they are on their toes with pure anticipation of racing ......On the parade you can feel their bodies tight like spring coils just wanting to race .........No one can MAKE a dog run if it doesnt want to ......You lot have got rid of coursing, and now lets keep targeting racing .....Let these dogs do what they are bred for .....RUN !!!! ......
 
We heard that once coursing was banned they would then target racing :rant: as you say Hannah most of these protsesters have probably never been near a race track and are just jumping on someone elses band wagon, IMO if you dont agree with something dont do it, but why spoil it for them that do?

im always ready to be educated by anyone. :thumbsup: but seeing as how my husbands best friend was a greyhound trainer for a great many years and his other mate was a bookie i dont think theres a lot i dont know about the sport.unless youre doing something they didnt do. :blink: i dont have any problems with racing.i can see the dogs enjoy doing what they were bred for. :thumbsup: what i do have a problem with however is the amount of greys each year that are killed purely because they arent fast enough to make enough money for their owners.so they get rid.THAT'S what i have a problem with and many other people too i suspect.if im an idiot because i care then so be it,i think i like being an idiot :)

Well they were there tonight in protest... all of about 6 of them... They were escorted from the turnstiles to outside the gates, when i went through there were only 2 on the front gates & 4 on the back gates

you know what annoys me about SOME greyhound people?(notice i say some not all)when antis make a remark about a person in racing who has done something bad,they instantly try to gain the upper ground by making personal derogatory remarks(go look long word like derogatory up in a dictionary) ;) of course everyone knows that when someone descends to making these types of personal remarks its cos the person making them has lost the high ground and is scrabbling around in the dirt trying to find some to throw.have a nice day ;)

That had about 15 of theses idiots at Hove shouting and yelling "is this how you celebrate your birthday" which upset one or two children.

Glad at least they where more cilivased at the Don.
 
Come on let's be sensible here - no-one can say that the dogs dont love running because they do.

But the rest of it - can you all honestly say that you are comfortable with healthy dogs being put to sleep because they are not fast enough and there are not enough pet homes? Or they have been injured and it's not cost effective to repair them so they are PTS. We are talking about dogs that are still nothing more than puppies sometimes, under 2 years old.

Perhaps people are against it because SOME aspects of it are wrong and SOME aspects should be addressed and then the sport can continue with everyone happy?

An excellent reply Rae. IMO The greyhound industry needs to clean up it's act and it's long overdue. If they don't then I fear that greyhound racing will be banned which would be a terrible shame IMO because there is nowt wrong with racing dogs as such. The wastage of greyhounds who aren't even wanted for racing, or can't make the grade, or get injured etc is far too many. There is simply too much wastage.
 
The problem with greyhound racing is it is predominantly a business. I came across a thread on a grey forum the other week where people was asked to post what dogs they've got. Everyone who replied had a combination of retired greys, currently injured dogs and 1-2 racing dogs. These postees I tend to feel see the sport as a hobby as they're devoting space, time and money that could be used on another racer but choose not to. I acknowledge there are many out there like this.

Then there's the businessmen /women who are hellbent on getting a winner, young dogs will pass through their hands and the ones that don't make the grade 'dissapear' if they're any good and reach NGRC level they'll run for a while and then when they start to deteriorate they'll be flogged to someone racing on the flapping tracks who will try to make their 'cut' and then they too can 'dissapear'

Personally I think that greyhound ownership should carry the same legislation as car ownership with the last owners being liable to hefty fines if they cannot account for the dog. I think that the necessary paperwork should also carry a DNA profile of the dog so regardless of ear mutiliations etc if a body is found it should be traceable back to the last owner. Now some may see this as financially impossible but a DNA test in the U.K. currently costs £500 and I don't see why this shouldn't be added to the purchase cost of a greyhound. I certainly feel this kind of initial financial investment will wipe out a lot of the unscrupulous breeding kennels that keep pups in poor conditions. The NGRC has plenty of money to staff a licensing team and hold a database to keep check on dogs but I also think bookies should also have to cough up too. I think DEFRA should oversee this is done properly like all the other factors that they are currently looking into.

I think this would do the sport a lot of good as it would remove the stigma people have about greyhound racing and everyone would appreciate the passion that these dogs have when it comes to racing. More people would go and watch and have a flutter which would generate further income.

Also I think all dogs racing should have a compulsary, specialist insurance in place because currently a vet can euthanise a dog if the owners cannot afford to pay the vets bills. If this financial issue was removed from the equation at least the vet can make a non-judgmental decision on treatment especially if they had to document their reasons for euthanasia on the forementioned licensing document.

Another thing I personally would like to see is that dogs aren't permanently kenneled at tracks, I think the detachment of the dog from their owner encourages rehoming. I also think if it's you putting the effort into the dog then your going to value it a damn sight more.

My Dad says anything that eats and s***ts costs money and with 20+ years of dog showing behind him he should know! We probably spent hundreds of thousands on vets bills, petrol, entry fees, food, importing dogs , stud fees etc etc all this for a hobby. So surely it isn't unreasonable to expect a substantial outlay into what is effectively a multi-million pound generating business?

Greyhound racing was once seen as the poor man's racehorse, personally I think this should be a thing of the past.
