Dentastix

I'm 100% sure they are overstating their case. I love that 'meat derivatives' might contain lungs, claws and heads. What's wrong with lungs, claws and heads, says Jasper :D According to them, potassium sorbate is downright dangerous, yet it's widespread in many human foods.

However... the ingredients certainly aren't great, so maybe they're the equivalent of giving your child a Mars Bar a day - and in my opinion there are much healthier ways of keeping your dog's teeth clean. So I don't feed them, but I wouldn't throw up my hands in horror if someone else did.
 
I dont like them the ingredients in them are rubbish. I rather brush my boy's teeth.
 
@Whippylove - I brush our dog's teeth too, but he only lets me get to the front ones and then it's a struggle:confused:.

@JudyN - he gets one Dentatix (Dentastick?) a day, maybe time to reconsider.
 
Lets face it in our heart of hearts we all know anything convenience food related is bad for us and that includes pet foods. The trick is to get the balance right. A little is fine a lot is bad...

Not that Murphy eats them he had one once but it gave him a runny bum so they are off the menu.
 
@arealhuman Oliver is exactly the same with toothbrush time he usually bites down hard on it and won't let go lol the other 2 are great, i also let mine chew on antlers they do a great job cleaning the back one's.
And I hope you didn't think I was being rude with my opinion on dentastix it didn't mean to come across that way :)
 
Yes, Figo has one every morning after his walk.... I don’t think they are any good for keeping teeth clean, it’s just a treat...I feed frozen raw turkey or duck necks As part of his daily diet these are much better for cleaning teeth
 
As @PWDmum says, some raw bones daily are good for teeth and general dental care, they are also very nutritious too.
 
Harri's toothbrush is a raw chicken wing for lunch. His teeth are glow in the dark white! He doesn't get a lot of biscuity treats that stick to the teeth which also helps.
 
Jasper has a chicken carcase each day. I tried brushing his teeth in the past but again, could only do the front ones. The vet checked his teeth while he was under sedation recently and at just shy of 9 years old, his teeth are in great condition - she just chipped off a bit of tartar.

Maybe I should try antlers - is there a preferred place to get them? How often should they be given? I tried a bone once, bu Jimmy ended up yelping so I haven't gone back to them. Any similar concerns with antlers?

I bought my antlers at my pet shop and I've also just bought half antlers off eBay for Christmas for them. My boys have had them for months and they're still in one piece (the whole antlers) my 9mth old pup uses them as well without issues. I usually bring the out a couple of times a day and just keep checking on them, it's the only time their quiet!
 
I brush Roxy's teeth and she also gets a daily Dentastick just as an extra treat and if it helps keep her teeth clean then that's a bonus, if it doesn't no big deal, does anyone think there are a healthier alternative, like a similar stick e.g.Dentalife with better ingredients?
I've tried antlers, she wasn't keen on it.

Dudley has Yakkers. Yak milk turned into cheese and then roasted. Very hard and usually lasts him three or four days.
He also has an antler, he doesn't like Dentistix.
Sulking today because we have been for his booster injection and he doesn't like the vet.
 
We use some alterntives for hard, crucnhy things for teeth. They are:

White Fish Jerky Fingers - he gets one twice a week.
Gentle Dental Bones (scroll down a bit to see them. On a side note, the Gentle Pack at the top of the page is great value). He gets these only occasionally. Dunno why, just the way it is!

Our dog likes them both!
 
Folly has fish4dogs squares, she loves them but they don't last her long.
 
@Nanny71 how safe are the yakkers chew? I've been looking at them for my pup but read they can choke on the end? Wondered what you think? Thanks

Thanks for that, I've seen yakkers around lately, might give it a go, sounds like a good alternative to rawhide which Roxy's lost interest in.
