Following the aftermath of 2011 English Derby, I felt I had to resign as Derby organizer.

I have staged 14 highly successful Derbies since the first one, way back in 1997.

I would think that most of the whippet racers around have at some time attended, and some may have even won an event or two over the years up and around the country!

It has taken a lot of hard work, but given an enormous amount of joy back.

In the past I have always tried to include non-racers to have a good time too.

For alongside the racing we also enjoyed many, many, great social evenings connected to the Derby, ie; Fancy-Dress, Karaoke/dog shows and kids/adults competitions (which came to a halt after the dangerous wellie-throwing incident)!!

This year a very unfortunate mistake was made on the distance run, so as Derby organizer I take full responsibility! I am deeply sorry and apologize unreservedly for the error made.

Sadly I’m sure I’m not the first, nor last who will make this mistake.

Anyone who knows me personally knows how gutted I am for you, and how bitterly disappointed I feel.

On the Wednesday morning after the Derby, the rumours emerged as the racers gathered to race at the Festival Open. It became apparent that the knives were truly out!

To say the ‘track was deliberately marked out for a much heavier dog to win’ and ‘the organisers had a vendetta against a certain person who got into the final’ plus ‘bets had been laid on who was going to win the Derby, before it began’ and several others!

The bitter mindless morons who spread this stupid slander are worthless!

The joy of winning has been tarnished by your stupid innuendo and lies.

To say I am a cheat is deplorable, I know I have been nothing but fair over the years, and no one is paid for what they do, whether an organisation or club, not even Whippet News.

The hours I spend compiling the magazine and organizing things, is for everyone’s benefit, not mine!

Through Whippet News since I started, I have given back to the sport over £13000 in prizes for the magazine’s Top Ten competition.

My day is spent from when I get up, opening the post and typing out the contents, taking emails and telephone calls from peds & non-peds at all hours of the day (my choice)….So whippet racing is my life and I haven’t raced a dog for nearly three years, its all done for just the love of it!

Paul & I built up Asfordby Wrc to championship standard, once held in high esteem!

I have edited Whippet News since December 1996, and organized the Derby covering 14 events, but after hearing the lies and seeing that some people believed them, made me take a hard look at myself and wonder what the hell I was doing wasting my time!!!

But, I am made of sturdier stuff than that….

Again I wholeheartedly apologise for the mistake made! I’d like to thank those who took the time to email, pm and telephone offering support, it was most appreciated, but it was only yesterday that I came to my senses!

I’m made of sturdier stuff than that, you learn quickly to have broad shoulders with the things I have been ‘tried with’ with over the years as Editor. The Derby will go on, and I can reveal that I have received an email from Alpha who were very pleased with the photographs & write up, they are to put to the ‘Board’ requesting to have their logo imprinted on the 2012 Derby Jackets, so fingers crossed for that! We will come back ‘bigger’ and ‘better’ in 2012. Instead of taking too much on ourselves the work will be spread out, the track marking will include a couple of racers, as will the weigh in and draw….we won’t leave ourselves open for mistakes again!

first of all this is not sour grapes because prada was beaten whats done is done. the best dog over the distance raced won, well done to skoshie.

thank you for addmitting the mistake, but i brought this to your attention after the first 3/4 races that the distance was wrong, and your reply was 'so what it's the same for all the dogs'. it's not when you have a under 20lb dog,all it would have taken to re-measure the track was a 10 minute job,we put a lot of hard work into our dog and spent a lot of hard to find money to come down to devon ,and expect to run over the correct distance after all it's not a dificult job to measure 160yds.

If you are going to quote me John get it right, I've said my piece....

Do you want a refund, or haven't you won enough in your Derby envelope, it's all about money with you!

What about the money Geoff, Hazel, Keith & Julie plus ourselves have pulled out going down to Devon before the event in order that you could run; petrol money and caravan site money.

The money I have paid for the Jackets, Paul for the two ton of sand, and plenty of other things, why are you the only one moaning about it, I have never seen you help out at any event, just one big moaner....

Oh, when I see you John you can have your £5 entry money back no problem (and I'll bet your greedy enough to take it) !!

wish i could get a run in the derby, injuries seasons bloody always something, but i tell you one thing Chris n Paul I'm pleased you made of better stuff and keeping going we need people like yous two..good luck from me n chris

sorry double posted

best thing for all is to put it behind and look forward to next time chris horsnal said it best about mistakes..... pleased to hear chris and paul are carrying on we know what a thankles task it is at times just gotta say i understand johns frustration but do beleive it was a genuine mistake sure we will all make plenty of those to come im sure

 I wasn't down at Devon, so I didn't know anything about this! I can honestly say that those who did go and have since returned haven't mentioned it at all. Just for my own curiosity, what distance did they run over and what distance should it have been. It can't have been out by much 'cos, let's face it, there isn't the room on the track! (w00t)

first of all i don't want anything back in fact you can have the £80 back to cover your expenses sand etc ( and i bet your greedy enough to take it ).

think i quoted you correctly you addmitted mistakes were made but were'nt willing to put them right.

as for being a moaner so you think 170yds is nothing to moan about when it is advertised at 160yds i bet if it had been measured at 150yds there would have been alot more moaners .

as for not doing anything i have always helped out at any open or big event when asked.

this is the last i will say on the matter .

You don't get many chances to win the English derby, a dogs racing career is short, so i fully sympathise with John, he put so much hard work into his dog only to be robbed by the distance of the race, and i'm sure he is'nt bothered about the money, he was more bothered about winning The English Derby, one of the biggest events in whippet racing and the prestige it brings.

I think people are going over the top. John has a right to be annoyed. [a whippets career is very short]

HI CHRIS AND PAUL I THINK YOU DO A WONDERFUL JOB,WE ALL MAKE MISTAKES.

ALL THE YEARS I HAVE KNOWN YOU YOU DONE NOTHING BUT GOOD FOR OUR SPORT.

LOOK FORWARD TO SEEING YOU SOON.

Robbed?

i wasnt going to get embroiled in this but after the above i feel have to...

All I know is my bitch ran her heart out over the Derby weekend in terrible conditions doing what she does, and WON, no one was robbed, no one cheated, and as JohnG said himself the best dog won on the day. Fair enough mistakes were made but can we just leave it and move on please.

Pleased your keeping the Derby going Chris & Paul, it wouldn't be the same if anyone else took it over  you 2 do a fantastic job  Really pleased, especially after the smart arse posted on here stating "Enjoy this Devon it will be the last" :clown:

Regarding the distance I'm as much to blame as Paul for not checking it, genuine mistake.

The distance will be measured when we go down this back end, and the lines will be painted with creosote
