Fingers crossed she does pass and he gets his Forever Home very soon - he's a stunning boy and deserves (as do all the dogs in shelters) a sofa of his own :huggles:

very strange world in that mongrels attract bigger prices than purebreeds

the grey whippet cross bedlington is off a rescue site!!!!

I think all the dogs pictured in the article are from rescue sites, I recognise a couple of them. I'm sure that was done deliberately to emphasise how silly it is for people to be going out deliberately looking for exactly the same crosses you can find in your local shelter.

The other very sad part of this is that once a particular breed or cross becomes 'fashionable' they start turning up in large numbers in rescue a short while afterwards. Rescues are now seeing large numbers of labradoodles and some of the other crosses starting to appear.

Sorry if it offends anybody but I think it's bl**dy disgusting that folks are being encouraged to deliberately breed these crosses and mongrels on his website

Wasn't it the Guide Dogs for the Blind who originally bred labradoodles as guide dogs for folks with allergies? I think all this crossing of pedigrees palaver took off from this as folks cottoned on ;) I've got no problem with professionals like Guide Dogs breeding carefully to get a mix that works well for them (haven't they found that labradors x golden retrievers are better workers than purebreds?) - it's when you get money-grabbing idiots who breed their pet bitch with any stud dog nearby and give the resulting pups fancy names  No health checks, no home checks, no aftercare etc - all they want is the gullible idiots who think they are buying the latest trendy breed to hand over the money and take the puppy away :(

Totally agree with everything you've said, Foxglove

The other things, of course, is that breeders can only register one ped litter per year, so the less scrupulous and the puppy farmers can alternate between ped litters and 'designer crosses' and mate their poor bitches every season :(

I used to work for Guide Dogs and there are more lab X GR's - the labs are so obsessed with food that it can cause probs, and the GR's are better for the older people. But most ppl do prefer the crosses.

"No health checks, no home checks, no aftercare etc" bit of a blind assumption?, breeders of kc of course always adhere to these protocols, and of course anyone who buys a x is a "gullible idiot"

Here Here. How can anyone asume that someone that breeds cross breeds do not look after and love their dogs as much as someone that breeds KC reg.

People that breed KC reg can do it for the money also.

once a market is created others will jump on the back of it who decides a English Bulldog is worth a £1000+ and if a breeder of Bulldog x whatever is charging £500 were is that wrong, as i was told on a thread were i queried the price of "pet pups" from litters of show dogs i was told "they all cost the same to rear"

I've no doubt there ARE breeders of pedigrees who don't do all the health checks and stuff - it's the idiots who are DELIBERATELY crossing various pedigrees (usually their pet bitch!!!), giving them a daft name and an even dafter price JUST to make a fast buck who I'm on about! It seems to have just 'taken off' in the past year or so and now there's more of these designer crosses in the papers than there are normal pedigree breeds :( The bit I can't understand is WHY folks are so STUPID to pay these silly prices when they are thousands of perfectly healthy dogs in rescue needing a good home  The same folks would probably balk at paying £100-£120 from a shelter for a 'mongrel' yet will happily pay five/six times as much for a designer cross because it has a silly name!

As to 'assuming' that somebody who breeds crossbreeds deliberately doesn't love & look after their dogs as much as a pedigree breeder - WHY breed crossbreeds deliberately when there aren't enough good homes to go around in the first place? Surely genuine dog lovers KNOW there's a glut of dogs and not enough good homes to go around? Look at all the poor ex-racers for a start! :(

I still say folks are jumping on the bandwagon to make a fast buck whilst designer crosses are 'trendy' and don't (in the majority of cases) give two hoots about the resulting pups and where they go to

If I remember, Ben Fogle and his father promoted the labradoodle!!!!!!! How irresponsible is that. We have pugaliers, inuitxgsds, westie x cairns all going for anywhere up to £500. What is it like?

Plus all the other wierd crosses at ridiculous prices in the local paper. All jumping on the band wagon, trying to make a fast buck!!!!

ditto I posted on IG section why oh why, yes they love their present dogs, I for one feel that its jumping on bandwagon as well, with a title of puppy farming, if I ever breed my girls it will be of same breed if I dont I will get them neutred,

I don't want to upset any owners of cross-bred dogs, cos we all love our own dogs, don't we, no matter what breed they are (or aren't) ... but there are so many dogs in rescue, pounds, dumped, unwanted, so many put to sleep cos no one wants them ... so why would anyone deliberately breed a litter from cross-bred dogs or breed from 2 pedigree dogs of different breeds?

Fair enough if a litter is born from an accidental mating (ie the bitch got out and got mated) - although I'm not defending that as an action either but we all know these things happen - but to deliberate arrange such a mating to take place??? When there are so many unwanted dogs already in the world? I just can't understand why, apart from the obvious answer.

And anyone who pays hundreds of pounds for a labradoodle or any other deliberate cross-mating, is fuelling the greed of such "breeders". Years ago you couldn't GIVE mongrels away. Now, they get a fancy made-up name and it seems "everyone" has to have one, at whatever cost.

As others already mentioned, it all did start with the Labradoodle and the Guide Dogs. They did try to get non-allergenic dog coat, but not all of the pups born did have the poodle coat and not all were suitable as guide dogs. The association, always desperate for funds decided to market them. They did splendid job and soon Labradoodles became very desirable, and the rest is a history.

Hopefully, this craze will disappear again, and mongrel will be considered mongrel and not something people are willing to pay double of what they would pay for purebred pup.
