After reading the poem on the other forum about whippets and the ark, I was wondering if whippets really are more destructive than other breeds. :- " I've only really known small dogs before I had whippets - I grew up with a Yorkshire Terrier and my parents then had a Mini Schnauzer so I don't know anything about the larger breeds. What do other people think?

I grew up with jack russels and they were very distructive.

One of them chewed her through a brand new fitted kitchen, lino and bottom half of a stable door and in 1981 that was alot of stuff to replace.

Another one chewed lino and carpet from the kitchen/dining room and 3 cushons from the settee...the ones you sit on...

The third one wasn't so bad with household stuff but he did chew on many pairs of shoes, pairs of knickers, my levi's  and other items of clothing that escape my memory.

My staffie x had her moments! She would eat just about anything - except radishes! Rarely had an upset stomach either. Mum's springer Cassie was pretty bad as a pup. Oliver, whippet x, actually took books out of the bookshelf to eat them! Nothing was safe from him as he could climb! He's part JRT so that might have something to do with it! :- "

My whippet girlie is actually pretty good. It's the boys who've been really naughty!

Stanley was a carpet digger as a pup. He dug up most of our carpet in the kitchen. Luckily we hated it and it was due to go anyway :sweating: He's never chewed though :))

i used to have a labrador who totally destroyed the kitchen, pulled up lino, pulled down the chimney covering and dug holes in the plaster, and the behaviour lasted for around 2 years, my first whippet wilf was quite naughty, chewing up the computer mouse and he had the knack of opening up the bathroom door and tearing up the toilet roll, once he actually managed to shut himself in there and ended up digging a hole in the door in his desperation to get out!

My first dog over 20 years ago was a Saluki X Deerhound and he chewed his way through the back door and also all the cushions on the settee, my whippets do chew the pine furniture and like to steal fluffy toys and chew their noses off and anything that may be lying around pens, barbies, make-up but not too bad :- "

ive had very expensive walnut cabinets chewed by my dobermanns over the year apart from that not much really.razzle has been such a good girl, apart from this thing she has for pens.she will go out of her way to get to a biro and chew it to pieces.shes not happy till shes totally anialated it.shes obviously got some deep seated psychosis about pens.im taking her to a shrink if it continues ;)

Izzy has been very good really, she chewed a pair of dads glasses and his credit card as a pup, both of which were left lying around! o:)

At home the only thing she has ever chewed is a handbag I left out.

As a kid I had a lab who completely ate a carpet

Most of my Danes and Borzois were absolute angels. The only thing that my Seraphina destroyed was a brand new cedar blind, but that was when I was taken to hospital (and kept there for 10days). Friend who she knew well moved in to take care of her, but he was working.

My friends flew with their Borzois to a show interstate, there they hired a car, left the dogs in it for little while and when they came back found the seats totally de-stuffed and ripped out dashboard (w00t)

I think most pups have the potential to be destructive if left alone, the difference is that if IG will decide to have a go at your antique table you may not even notice, while the Dane will eat the whole leg. :)

I would think that hyperactive breeds are more likely to do damage than the quiet ones.

My Whippets are selectively destructive; Callista used to chomp up any biro she got hold of, Stella just cannot resist glasses, Genevieve is not so particular she will have a go at both biros, reading /sunglasses and their cases :)

Ive only ever had whippets.... but my mam had a cocker spaniel and before that a Red Setter.

My first little girl was quite an angel o:) but have to agree with Hillary the boys do seem worse. My dog Chip that I had before Oscar and Kobi, only ever chewed his puppy things apart from a small photo frame of my daughters which still has the evidence of his teeth marks.

Oscar and Kobi have destuffed their sofa bed cushions and the arm has a hole in it... but they seem to have calmed down now where the chewing is concerned but Oscar still has a thing for paper shredding...paper tissues, and kitchen roll mainly and any documents left lying around... including my works staff rota a fortnight ago. which he actually took out of my work bag himself.

Im watcing this little guy like a hawk and hoping he dosnt turn into Muffin and Jonah (w00t)

My dad used to have a austrailian terr x and she was a bit mad she used to scale the 6ft fence in the garden and go visiting the neighbours who were not dog friendly

We had a pine dining table and six chairs when Milly-the-labrador came along. She chewed her way out of her puppy-pen, chewed every leg on the table, every leg on EACH of the chairs, chewed the SEAT of each chair, the seat pads, chewed the front of our very expensive french dresser, chewed shoes to destruction... and then socks, pens, the TV remote, her plastic bed, all of her bedding, her own collar, coal from the coal scuttle (bye bye cream coloured rug) and anything else she could get her sodding teeth on

The most perfect dog from the chewing perspective has been the Iggies - they don't even de-stuff their toys! But, Lottie was lying in bed one day beside the leg of my easel and just gently started gnawing on that! It's just a deep scratch really because she's too beautiful and perfect to do real damage

my friends staffi actually ate through the wall! Plaster, breeze blocks, the lot!!

The hole was behind the settee and they never realised what she was doing! (obviuosly didnt clean up much!)

I didnt belive it till i saw the lil hole at the otherside of the wall! (w00t)

We have been very lucky with our Whippets none of them have been destructive at all and we have 7 that we have had from puppies.

When we had the Dane though, she ate her way through most of the kitchen including the metal handle off the fidge?? and also ate a huge Dane sized hole in the utility room door! (w00t)

We now have a Basenji.....and NEVER again!! he just eats EVERYTHING in sight... table legs, chair legs, beds, crates, sofa's,curtains, cushions, plants etc,etc.......... the list is literally endless. :( :(

our whippet is good, she doesnt chew anything, the kids leave their toys and stuff lying around and she has never touched them :D

its a different story if its food though, shes a greedy little girl :teehee:

I have always heard any dog will and can be destructive. They say exercise will help them burn off a lot of that excess energy so they are less likely to be destructive. Also rules boundries limitations help too. Don't know if you ever watch Dog Whisper. He says exercise, disipline then affection will make for a more well balanced and good dog.

I am looking at owning a Whippet. I am glad I saw this posting, another fact to consider.
