My Whippet is pregnant and I don't know whether to get the pup's dewclaws removed as I know it is illegal. What does everyone think?

Also she has 9 teats, is that normal?

its not illigal my vet does it and so do quiet a few mine charges £5 a pup it depends what the pups are goig to do. after seeing my lurcher rip her dew claw badly a few times its so painfull I would allways have mine pups done even in pet homes as they do have a tendancy to catch them and its so so painfull. but thats my choice

Its very easy to do kirs, ive done all my pups over the years--and NEVER had any growing back in.! make sure there done before 3 days old.!

It is not illegal(not as yet,but you never know if this will happen)Some vets may refuse to do them.My vet still does puppys dewclaws,by three days old.It cost £35.00 to do my seven pups :)

Hey Kirs

Congrats on the pregnancy  - when is she due?

I'm pretty sure my vet said that it's not illegal to do them before 10 days - but it's better to do them before three! I would get your vet to do them as if it's not done properly they can grow back (am sure you already know this) - Marlo's front right one grew back - and it's black so I can't see the nail bed (makes it really difficult to trim!)

:luck: :luck: :luck:

Hi, It's defo not illegal to get them done.

I would recomend it

I have had lots of problems over the years with one of my lurcher bitch's tearing them out all the time, poor thing :(

once they tear them once they seem to be more prone for it happening again.

Dew claws are nothing but trouble.

Get them done. It is worth the price to pay to protect the dogs from significant damage if they run in brush or bramble and injure themselves with dewclaws. Dewclaws are illegal to do in some countries (such as Denmark -- we have two Danish imports with dewclaws and we learned to vet wrap the legs of these dogs early on when running them in our back 5 acre pasture) but England still does not have a limitation and I urge you to do them. We here in Canada have our vet do them for $10 Cdn. per dog on day 1 or 2. We have owned whippets and greyhounds for nearly 30 years and only the dogs with dewclaws have had problems running in gorse. We had a black greyhound who so severely injured herself running in thickets and injuring her dewclaw and leg that it cost the modern day equivalent of 400 pounds in surgery to fix the damage done by a simple course through woodlands.

You will more than make back the money you spend on removing dewclaws, by selling your pups free of them. Do them for the health and safety of the dogs, because they really are a nuisance.

I have had many bitches with odd number of nipples, anything from 7 to 11. Nothing to worry about:)

Thankyou for all the info.

She is due 5th April. Can't wait!

I have found a Vet to remove the dewclaws. £1.07 each pup!

When we had our pups dewclaws done last year my vet was away at the time and so the locum did them. I should have started to worry when he told me he had never seen whippet pups so young. Out of 9 pups 5 had dewclaws hat grew back although it looked as if they had been taken of cleanly when they were done.

Simba had to have his removed again as it was causing him problems. I didn't pay for this as I'd paid once it wasn't my fault the locum didn't do it right. My vet sacked the locum not just about that but other things as well. I've never had a problem when my proper vet has done them. Although he has told me they are trying to make it illegal and the next time to check with him so that he can find out how he stands.
