any info greatly appreciated

ive been in touch with my vet re dew claw removal in puppies.

ive been quoted £22.50 per puppy

if this is the "going rate" then fair enough but it seems a lot of money for a simple procedure ???

does this seem a fair price to you ?

(i am talking 2/3 day old pups )

I have no idea of the going rate for this, but I do have to say that it may be a simple procedure, but I'd happily pay a vet 22.50 - and then look the other way :x

Well vets do know how to charge don't they (w00t) I've seen it done and it literally takes seconds

I wasn't going to watch because I thought there would be lots of sceaming :( but there was none :sweating: obviously I watched a very experienced person doing it though so that would make a lot of difference

Maybe Mark could do it for you , if you pay his petrol of course , Bloody Vets (w00t) Rob dogs as usual  I take mine over to June Cox , Im sure someone near you must be able to do it ,

Ring round other vets too

I would leave them on at that price. :( Sorry, sounds like a lot for someone that does his own.

Are you sure that they know its for baby pups? Mine charge about £7.00 each pup. They came up with £40 each until they had picked me off the floor and realised it was for 2/3 day old pups. I have to say they were really good too. No-one local to do it for me.

I had a fall out with a vet over Dew claws One year she charged me fifty pounds for a litter and a couple of years later she tried to charge me £150 I ended up paying her £100 but now I go to another vet £15 first 3 and then £3.50 each one afterwards?

Not all vets remove Dew claws and mine doesnt like me telling anyone else he does it??

Blimey, where are you in the country Saraquele, surely there must be someone as experienced as the revered Mr Mark Roberts near enough to you to help, and wouldn't charge you these ridiculous amounts.

When I was nursing, the vets didn't even do this procedure half the time, we did it whilst he was giving the dam a thorough check over and charged £2.00 per pup. And NO I'm not that old :- "

Ten months ago we paid the equivalent of Pounds Sterling 56 for 6 pups. This included the vet´s visit as we do not like taking a litter to the surgery. Stephen

4 years ago i was charged one consultaion fee then £4.50 per pup.

i had to go to a different vet than my own to get them done as mine refused to do them on grounds that it was unnessesary, then a couple of years later my vet charged me £250.00 to remove dew claws off an adult dog who was constantly ripping them

now after watching them being done by the guy who TAUGHT Mr Roberts to remove them properly, i'd go to him  :D

I had two pups done recently at two days old, and the vet charged £22 for the pair. Lots of vets won't do dew claws anymore, I felt I was lucky that a couple of vets at my usual practice did .Must admit I never shop around for the cheapest price - I trust the senior vets where I go and they always do me the courtesy to treat me as a reasonably knowledgable person.

I've already sent Seraqueal a PM as if I remember rightly she's not very far from me?.

most vets round here wont do it

i dont mind paying , but i dont like vets ripping ppl off

and if they are not experienced in doing it , it can be worse than leaving them on

My own vet would not remove the dew claws and I was told this is because it is a "Barbaric Procedure" - I felt really stressed at being told this and contacted a vet in the next village who was more than happy he charged me £19.50 for 5 puppies and they didn't even murmur, the vet was great.

My vets have said they don't like to do it, but won't harrass me if I get someone else to. I have a couple of breeder friends who have said they'll do them and a vet I go to agility with who said she'll come round and do them if needed so thankfully I have lots of backup, so it just depends on who's available at the time.

I had dew claws removed from 5 pups in May, Im sure I was only about £6.00 per pup. My vet was happy to do them, no probs at all.

Yes it was Mark  didn't say so earlier because I didn't want you to think I was going soft and complimenting you :- " :teehee:

Hi,we always have the dew claws removed from our pups at 3 days old.The owner of our vets does it for us at a cost of £5.50 per pup and says he thinks it is a responsible thing to have done for racing dogs.although most of the younger vets who work there will not remove them. The reason they need to be done by the age of 3 days is after this time thier nerve system matures and it would then cause discomfort.Whilst some pups have let out a little squeal some have slept through it.I do think the price you were quoted is a bit high (w00t)for a simple snip
