Hello, I am new here and don't know where else to go. Does anyone have any experience with diabetic dogs? We are new to it, and recently had to fork out over £2500 and every appointment costs £195. It took out our savings as we had been unemployed for a month after budget redundancy.

She has been doing fine for a month, and the last two days is having hypos. One two hours before her meal, where she collapsed and started fitting. I called the Vet who refused to give advice unless I paid first and brought her in. So I googled first aid and used Honey on her gums and a small amount of food. She settled. She has been fine today.

This evening, she has had her dinner and her jab - then around 15 minutes later went into a fit again and collapsed. I used the honey method which brought her round again and a small amount of wet meat as she had eaten. I can only work by assumption that the insulin may have been too high a dose for her needs - maybe the requirement is changing, I don't know. It has brought her back and she is weak, but settled.

I am looking for advice maybe reassurance as well. the vet wouldn't even give us first aid advice without fees. We just can't afford their estimate of £500 every day to keep her stable. It appears vets here are cash before care, it is not something we are used to. Any experience would be appreciated. Thanks in Advance.

I don't know how helpful this will be but my neighbour has a diabetic cat and I believe they had to tweak the doses at first until they found what suited her.

£195 sounds a lot for an appointment, I'd shop around and see what other vets in your area charge, or perhaps use the PDSA if you can.

I'm so sorry you're in this position. £195 for a consultation seems exhorbitant - my vet charges £58 for a standard appointment, and would often give advice without charging. I agree with JoanneF that you should shop around.

I have friends who had a diabetic dog and it took them a long time to find the right dose to stabilise him. It was very expensive, but I'm sure much less than £500 a day.

My aunts lab was diabetic. She fed low GI diet and chose 3 or 4 small meals a day. Help to keep sugar levels stable.
Crashing like that sounds as if the insulin is too high.

Agree with the others your vet is very ( eyewatering expensive)

No experience with diabetes our vets now charge £72 for a consult ...its just awful xx
