HI EVERYONE,

THIS IS MY FIRST POST SO BEWARE!!!!! :- "

IVE JUST GOT A LURCHER PUP FROM DAVID HANCOCK DOWN IN BIRMINGHAM HES A LOVELY 3 MONTH OLD BLUE MERLE 3/4 GREYHOUND 1/4 BORDER COLLIE CALLED BLUE.

WHEN I GOT THE PUP HANCOCK GAVE ME A BAG OF THE PUPPIE FOOD HE FEEDS HIS DOGS BUT IT WAS GIVING BLUE A RUNNY BUM AND HE LOOKED QUITE THIN FOR A PUP? I THINK IT WAS MAYBE TO RICH FOR HIM???

I'VE SINCE PUT HIM ON CHICKEN AND RICE AND IT SEEMS TO HAVE SOLVED THE PROBLEM BUT I REALLY WANT TO PUT HIM BACK ONTO A DRY COMPLETE FOOD AS ITS ALOT EASIER, BUT EVERY TIME I TRY TO INTRODUCE HIM TO THE DRY FOOD THE RUNNY BUM COMES BACK!!!!! I'VE TRIED A FEW DIFFERENT BRANDS AND STILL NO LUCK!!!!!

DOES ANYONE HAVE ANY TIPS OR RECCOMENDATIONS FOR ME AS THEY WOULD BE GREATLY APPRECIATED!!!!

If the chicken and rice suits him then i would leave him on it. Its whats best for your pup that matters as they will go downhill rapidly with constant upset tums from changing food. STICK TO WHAT SUITS.

DO YOU THINK HE WILL BE GETTING EVERYTHING HE NEEDS FROM THE CHICKEN AND RICE THOUGH? OR WILL HE NEED SOME SUPPLEMENTS???

try getting a gluten and wheat free complete , james welbeloved , davies ranger etc it will say gluten free etc on bag so the brand dosent make a great deal of diffrence , introduce it very slowly , bit by bit mixed in with the chicken and rice also get him off to the vet for a good worming ! as worms can cause a whole load of problems :thumbsup:

If he is fit and well worm him with drontal or another good wormer.

He will need 27% protein at least.

I would put him on Redmills or Wafcol racer, or like me Jollys racer.

Is he your first 3/4 bred?

They are so so easy to teach, i had two and both were a joy to own.

both worked to hand signals.brilliant to watch and i couldnt help showing off :b

both mine where from Hancock only down side where they were nervious and became a one man dog.

Travis my last 3/4 bred, sadly killed on a railway track

THATS A LOVELY DOG!!!

HIS HEAD MARKINGS ARE VERY SIMILAR TO "BLUES" ONLY "BLUE" HAS TWO BLUE EYES BUT SAME PINK AND BLACK NOSE (w00t) , HIS BODY IS ALL WHITE, WHICH IS A BIT OF A SHAME AS I WAS AFTER ONE WITH SIMILAR MARKINGS TO YOURS, WAS TRAVIS SIRED BY HANCOCKS STUD DOG KUBLA???

A LOT OF PEOPLE HAVE SAID THE SAME THING AS YOU ABOUT HOW EASY THEY ARE TO TRAIN!!!! WHICH IS EXACTLY WHAT IM LOOKING FOR AS ITS MY FIRST DOG FOR A WHILE SO ALL ADVICE WELCOME!!!!!!!

That picture is 7 yrs old, He was from Stormin Norman

(borderx greyhound, sired by rufus the red).

You will find they learn so easy, sometimes the bad as fast as the good.

You will also learn so much from him as he is your first lurcher, first lurchers always stay in your mind. :b :b

Start on his retreaving within the next few days( indoors away from strange smells and people).i used to work shifts so did mine at 6am in my kitchen.

They just love it.

you will just not believe how easy he will learn things.

my lurcher (i rescued by managed to trace his breeder) has got "rufus the red" in his breeding have you many more info on this dog?? I think my dogs grandsire was a hancock lurcher? would that make sense?

Rufus was out of a sire called Moss a red border collie and a bitch called Beth a red merle border collie.

I THINK IVE BEEN TRYING TO CHANGE HIM OF THE CHICKEN AND RICE TO QUICKLY? SOMEONE SAID IT NEEDS TO BE DONE GRADUALLY???

HE'S NEARLY FOUR MONTHS NOW, WOULD YOU PUT HIM ON ADULT FOOD OR STILL PUPPIE FOOD???

Anything with racer on the bag and high protein should do.

puppy food is the same thing but smaller and usually twice the price.

Redmills is only about £11 a 15kg sack.

If he looks well on the puppy food and your happy in buying it , then stick to that.

my terriers are on cheap low grade %20 protein food at £6.50 but as pups they always get fed on better grub .As will my next lurcher up until him being a year or so old or longer when im running him hard.

No i never bred a litter of lurchers

my best lurcher was a deerhound blooded dog from Dennis Brown.

This dog took everything from a mouse to fallow.

He broke his front legs so bad he had to be pts.

I have had two Hancock 3/4 breds both dogs and both sadly killed at a tender age

18mths and 2 yrs.

I have had racing whippet type dogs, mixture of whippet and greyhounds.

mine were rabbiting dogs so didnt school very well at the plastic hares :b

My whippet/grey were very fast but couldnt stay, they also had bad feet.

i gave them away to lads that just wanted the odd rabbit and hunted once a week.

the good thing about them was they were very easy to get fit .

My next lurcher will be a first cross deerhound greyhound.

I like the way the deerhound crosses put there heart into the way they run.

one of my collie crosses wouldnt run if he thought the rabbit could get away

he lost a few because of it, ones that i knew would bounce of sheep wire or walls etc.

At the moment i have 4 plummer terriers

YEAH! WOULDNT MIND SEEING THEM PICS OF YOUR TERRIERS, DO YOU KNOW MUCH ABOUT TERRIERS? MY PARENTS HAVE A 4 YEAR OLD JACK, HE'S A HOUSE PET REALLY BUT EXTREMELY INTELLIGENT, BEEN TAKING HIM OUT WITH THE NEW PUP, JUST THE OTHER DAY HE CAME ACROSS A LAPWING CHICK AND FROZE WITH HIS FRONT FOOT UP IN THE AIR ABOVE THE BIRD LIKE SOME SORT OF POINTER SADLY THE PUP GOT TO HIM BEFORE I COULD AND ATE THE BIRD WHOLE :x

DO YOU THINK ITS TO LATE FOR HIM AS A WORKING DOG? LIKE TO GET HIM AND BLUE OUT TOGETHER DONT THINK HES GOT THAT KILLER STREAK IN HIM???
