Having never had a male whippet in our household before we kept Thunder

from our litter some 7+ months ago - and there are subtle

differences that are hard to describe so here are some of the more

obvious ones first -

he is Bigger than the girls - one would not think that the additional

10 to 12 lbs would not make that much of a difference - wrong -

26 to 28 lbs hitting you at 30 mph or so with front feet and legs

stiff as a board at the waist is one thing - getting hit like that

in the chest from 40 lbs or so is a whole different manner - you can

be dropped like a sack of potato's - there is no protection from

puppy exuberance - one would not think that 2 to 3" in height would

make a whole lot of difference - however that makes him about 4"

longer just standing - when he stretches out he now takes 1/2

the couch instead of the 1/4 we have grown accustomed to with

the girls - when 40 lbs jumps up into your lap and plops down

you know for sure you have been Snuggled!!!!!! - if you have

a bad back he is closer to hand if you want to pet him - dont

have to bend over so far to give him a pat on the head -

since he is larger we did expect him to require more food - those

extra pounds require twice as much - the big bugger really

can put away the groceries <G> - neither Paula or I are complaining

about any of the differences and/or similarities between the sexes

just pointing out our own observations - he does have a totally

different personality - he is not pushy unless food or treats are

involved - then no one crowds him out - he withstands a lot of

grief from the girls - he does demand a lot of attention - if you

call him he is right there immediately - sometimes the girls you

have to call several times before they decide that you really want

something - Thunder has the expression of what do you want me

to do - huh - huh - what - where - yeh I'm ready - ok - --- the girls

ok I'm here now what - Thunder has learned to leave the cranky

ones alone (Delta, thunders mother, is in season and is a bit

out of sorts) and very cranky with him - don't know if he knows

yet what is going on (which right now is ok with me) -

he is a totally devoted individual for us - he is still learning and we

hope that has he matures his enthusiasm becomes directed

and his manners continue to develop in the direction which we

started him - he is a magnificant beast - we havnt had him long

and is still a pup but we just could not imagine not having him

around for many years to come -

i notcie a differance between my girls and boys too, like you said the re-call the boys come at a hundred miles an hour, the girls if they bother at all come at a slow walk! also when my boys sit on my knee i can move around as much as i like, the girls (if i dare move) huff and puff at me (w00t)

Thanks for sharing your thoughts . I hope to own a whippet some time in the future and have often wondered if I would prefer a dog or a bitch . I do prefer the size of the bitches but have heard that the dogs are easier . I have owned dogs and bitches in other breeds but all breeds are different .

I have 1 of each and the male is definately more loving.. The female seems to pick things up a lot faster but it much slower to actually follow a command (and as for trying to catch her on a recall if there is something more interesting to chase forget it...)

I have also noticed that the male seems to be better behaved for me and the female is better behaved for her dad.. anyone else found this or is it just my two?

My boys love me to bits and the girls couldnt care less, whereas with Mark its the opposite, give me my loyal devoted loving boys anytime. :huggles:

I wouldn't swap my boys for girls for any price.... I love my boys to bits! Here's my boy Zair who is just sooo lovable - he talks to us all the time, smiles at us when we come home (with his teeth slightly bared) and is a total clown - so entertaining!

WOW What a handsome boy

Does anyone else get the bizarre telling off when they get home as well... ? Daniel kind of mouths something which comes out as A wur Wur Wur

Inca talks alot, she greets you with a right conversation and a toy.

If you ask her to talk she will...if she's that way out. (w00t)

If I just wanted to have one whippet ( to start with !!!! :- " ) would a male be happy with being the only dog in the house for a while ? I've got two Shibas at the minute and the bitch ( age 11 ) is very independent but the dog ( age 8 1/2 ) is very clingy and doesn't really like it when we are out but has never protested by destroying anything :sweating: .

I had a male as the only dog for just over a year before we got our female.. He was fine as he is pretty laid back.

Not saying this will be the same for everyone, just my experience!

(PS - You could always try and meet up for whippet walks with other K9'rs)

I have 2 boys and one is the most loving, obedient clingy boy  the other is the complete opposite - everything in his own time, not very obedient, not particularly willing to do anything that you ahve asked him to do etc etc (w00t) and he prefers men as well...hmmm  I think he is a bitch in a dogs outfit!

I agree! Zair is very handsome

My Ronan will bring a toy and tell you ALL about it when you come home, when he's finished doing that he then has to strut around, shouting Ro Ro Ro at the other boys, pretending he is VERY fierce.

If I could only have one Whippet (or two maybe), and had to choose I would go for a male every time.

 Thanks for your advice and I am now sure that I will have a male to start with , but I hear they are addictive (w00t)

whippets are addictive but only after the first one gets to be about 2 years old

or so and develope manners and brains - you tend to forget just what you

had to go through to get them to that point <VBG>

there is a male pup of 6 months down a few posts on this forum

that needs a new home - you might check that one out - dont be afraid

of a puppy - but one that is old enough to be house broken and past teething

might be better in your situation - might fit you bill quite nicely -

I am better known on our side of the pond (USA) as being one to spin

a few yarns and tales with a few literary liberties with the truth sometimes <VBG>
